Weight of this Record: 163 grams. A heavyweight record, far more typical for this label with the RSLP prefix. When Kinney took over, pressings became considerably thinner.

Rarity: Quite scarce as a genuine UK first issue, hardly commercial, also the RSLP number was soon to be discontinued for the new K (Kinney) number. I feel the price guides are somewhat misguided on this one.

Brief Info: The first solo album by this gifted American guitarist. One of the original musicians in Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band and playing on his classic debut ‘Safe as Milk’ album in 1967. He left soon after and recorded this album in 1970 with very different music to what he played with Beefheart. This a more roots blues-based set that also features a couple former Frank Zappa band musicians in Roy Estrada, the original bass player in The Mothers of Invention, and Max Bennett who featured on the classic ‘Hot Rats’ set from 1969. Not really commercial and certainly not one available very long with the first RSLP catalogue number. This a very fine example that plays very well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or close to. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the heavy-duty polylined white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A fine looking, and clearly wear-prone front, especially with a 160 gram record inside for 46 years. There is a faint trace of a sticker residue mark near the bottom right corner but with minimal hint of any surface disturbance or pulling. Any rubbing or creasing little and light, mostly hairlines near the sides. Gentle rim impression, but no penetrating ring wear and small tip rubs. This a genuine first issue cover with the RSLP number as seen. Overall, this quite unforgiving front has fared well.

Cover Back: The back is impressive and for a black and white unprotected surface, this has aged little with minimal grubbiness or rubbing. A little quite light creasing near the right.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight with very little wear up to the ends which have rubbed.

Bottom Edge: Quite light patchy rubbing, again straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring light and patchy as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Again thin, but in very impressive condition. Solid, straight with minimal compression, this shows little rubbing or grubbiness at all to the white surface. All text is perfect and unworn, also superbly centred on a very narrow depth.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with fine shape retained, no bashes, any dinking evidence tiny.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this scarce and unforgiving early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a heavy-duty white polylined inner that again were changed with the Kinney change over. Little aged with the odd tone spot or so, minimal creasing and two pristine window circles. The polylining neat and clear, all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Mild mottling seen within the pressing under light, but this is well pressed and offers very fine sound throughout. Two clicks were heard on the final song from a tiny speck-mark in the groove. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality blues-roots album plays even above it’s high visual grading withlittle to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, but as stated above, a couple of clicks were heard on the final song – hardly bad for a 46-year-old record – and no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this very first issue significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only modestly and mainly with due caret. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record, this my first ever copy. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
