Notes: About this title: Ruth Fernandez is one sad woman, and Es de Borinquen does very little to change that image. Despite the amount of up-tempo, fun songs found here, her voice is so naturally melancholic that it is hard to imagine she could ever be happy. Sounding like she's on the verge of weeping at any moment, Fernandez manages to add layers to the up-tempo songs because her voice betrays the mood without ruining it. Instead, on tracks like "Mano Lao" she ends up sounding like she really means it, more than most performers would. This is actually a very solid collection of songs that manages to showcase her immense vocal talents without giving her fluff to sing. Fans of Latin vocal jazz should give this a listen; there are some wonderful moments on this album. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi
