ROLLING STONES Beggars Banquet 1968 UK DECCA MONO 1st !
The Rolling Stones, Beggars Banquet.
Original 1968 UK pressed Decca Records scarcer mono LP, LK 4955.
Earliest heavy pressing on the unboxed red and silver label. This pressing does not have the distinctive Decca groove, as this was phased out by 1968.
Matrix suffixes 4A/2A, mothers/stampers CM 1 / UH 1.
An unusually well preserved issue. I am not prone to using excitable hyperbole in my descriptions, but this really is a top end copy of this one.
Vinyl in top end EX plus condition. As can be seen in the photos, there is some evidence of spider trail marks at centre spindle areas, but this is to a minimum and suggests very few plays. The labels and vinyl surfaces still have a really high gloss. A cursory inspection of the vinyl surfaces reveals just a couple of wispy and superficial hairline scuffs. Closer inspection with a magnifying glass reveals a few tiny and inconsequential sleeve removal type hairlne scuffs. There are no deep marks or scratches at all. Clearly a little played and exceptionally carefully handled LP.
Playback is excellent and noise-free throughout. The surfaces are impressively silent and have full blooded early Decca mono sound without any distortion. No crackle, ticks or clicks, and just the expected very infrequent single soft static dust pop (I have not made any attempt to clean the LP, see notes below).
The LP is perfectly flat and not dished or warped at all.
Note that any dark marks to the vinyl surfaces in the photos are merely reflections, not blemishes.
Labels are bright, clean and unmarked.
Inner sleeve is correct period poly-lined "blue dot" and in excellent condition. Crisp white and unbrowned, no seam splits, and absolutely minimal creasing along the outline of the vinyl. The catalogue number of the LP has been neatly penned to one top corner of the rear of the inner sleeve.
External gatefold sleeve is also very well preserved. The fully laminated exterior still has a very high gloss and is not marred with pen, sticker or other marks. There is just one minute dot of a tan stain to the bottom centre of front panel. There is barely any trace of ringwear at all, with just the minutest rubbing scuff at top of front and rear panels, although this really is barely noticeable. Angling the sleeve in front of a light source reveals just one half moon to the right hand side of the front laminate and a couple of tiny pinch line creases leading in from the spine area. Spine is in great shape with just the expected single linear hairline crease to centre. Head and foot are not worn or scuffed. Top and bottom edges are similarly well preserved and without seam splits, fraying or chipping. Entry side still very crisp and without feathering. The sleeve still creaks when opened, always a good sign as it shows little previous use. Inner part of gatefold is also in excellent condition and retains rich colour without any stains or marks.
All in all, a superb issue, and as close to a final ugrade as one could hope for. There must be very few extant issues of this scarce mono press in anything approaching this condition after over four decades.

A Note On Grading:Note that audio grading is subjective and based on sensitivity of equipment used for playback. In this instance playback has been tested on a vintage Technics Quartz Direct Drive SL1700 MKII turntable with Shure cartridge, Technics SU-C 03 amp and Technics SB-F2 Linear Phase speakers.
Also note that I generally do not clean vinyl unless so noted. Most vinyl will show improved playback quality with your preferred cleaning method, but I leave this to the prospective buyer, as controversy still surrounds the ideal method of cleaning vinyl.
