First issues from 1969 included a larger Swirl logo on side two and included ‘A Phlips Record Product’ at the 6 o’clock position, second pressings omitted this text. As seen, this third pressing has the small Swirl logo on side two

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Brief Info: The debut solo Rod Stewart album and one of the earliest issued on this massively collectable label. A more commercial album to grace Vertigo – this actually charted briefly, but failed to break into the top 20, so first issues are quite elusive. A superb album, issued before he really became a household name, it includes the magnificent ‘Handbags and Gladrags’ as used for the television comedy ‘The Office’. A lovely cover as well, in the Vertigo mould – the outside graphics are deliberately shot out-of-focus in manufacture. This is a strong slightly later copy with a very clean record and sound. The cover is little short of immaculate, and rarely seen as such – the Swirl inner also impressive as seen.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+)+: with any minor blemishes only really seen with close up scrutiny under light. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the Swirl inner. Inside includes the original text warning that states: ‘Copyright subsists in all Vertigo records’.

Cover Front: Most of any minor surface marks or blemishes are fine and very light, mostly seen more critically under light. Generally very clean, fresh and hugely attractive with minimal creasing – one of the Vertigo early classics.

Cover Back: Largely the same, possibly better if anything. Faint rim rubbing again seen under light near the top and bottom that few will ever avoid, here almost as light as it gets. The lack of penetrating ring wear is a massive plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is little short of immaculate and hugely eye-pleasing.

Top Edges: Both immaculate: very straight, flush and with no wear.

Bottom Edges: Almost the same with a couple of tiny surface chips only, storage edges on non-laminates seldom fare this well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is straight and unworn. The back opening is clean, the inside one very sharp, the slightly wide outside with a little thickening or burring here-and-there as seen viewed end-on. No trimming or enhancements guaranteed.

Spine and Text: Hardly any real wear, but a little faded by natural light, but colour still strong. Solid, thick and straight with hardly any compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is present and unworn. Even the folds have avoided rubbing, scuffs or chips.

Corners: Hardly any corner wear, any tip rubs are tiny and light, better than excellent shape mostly retained with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this attractive cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or very close to. This one has the correct slightly later soft lining as seen through two two crisp neat window circles. The actual lining does have a scuff mark. The only creasing of note is on the bottom left corner area. Generally clean, almost exceptionally so with just some of the usual seam adhesive darkening here-and-there. All edges unsplit and strong with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, with lovely shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy appearing lightly played, but generally with care as any surface marks are only very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Just one tiny fine mark at the beginning has around half-a-dozen gentle ticks, these largely masked by the music, so not for perfectionists, but it does play very well that apart. Visually impressive and one to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Rod Stewart classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault bar the very brief blemish at the start which really is very minor indeed. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, overall a fine clean pressing which is not always the case on album. Both channels are clean and sharp with no tracking issues*. I am certain this record has been played only quite modestly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, but not for audiophile purists who only want ‘perfection’ at any cost.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
