Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1929, Hawkins first made a name for himself as a good boxer - but then took up singing - or rather, screaming -he is called Screamin' Jay for a reason. Screamin' Jay developed a rhythm that can be described as demoniac: "I Put A Spell On You" and "Hong Kong" are good examples. One should not take this likeable gentleman too serious, though; there's doubtlessly a touch of exhibitionism about him, but behind his fiery vocals there is the force of attack and the power of an authentic champion of the boxing ring.
