Pity the aging rock star. All those declarations about sugar mountains and hoping to die before he got old don't leave much room for middle age. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant understood this in 1997 as they began work on Walking Into Clarksdale, the duo's first album-length collaboration on all-new material since Led Zeppelin blew apart in 1980. Despite inevitable comparisons with the music of their youth, their work here (recorded by punk deity Steve Albini) is no embarrassment. Too many of the tracks are frustratingly dry and somber, but the duo find shades of "Kashmir" on the epic "Most High," while Plant croons a beautifully Zeppelinesque chorus on "When the World Was Young." The Ceaseless Roar" is his label debut with Nonesuch and features 11 new recordings, nine of which are original songs written by Robert Plant with his band, The Sensational Space Shifters — Justin Adams: bendirs, djembe, guitars, tehardant, background vocals; John Baggott: keyboards, loops, moog bass, piano, tabal, background vocals; Juldeh Camara: kologo, ritti, Fulani vocals; Billy Fuller: bass, drum programming, omnichord, upright bass; Dave Smith: drum set; and Liam “Skin” Tyson: banjo, guitar, background vocals. 

lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar is Plant’s first record since 2010’s Band of Joy, which followed 2007’s six-time Grammy Award–winning collaboration with Alison Krauss, Raising Sand. Justin Adams and John Baggott of The Sensational Space Shifters appeared on Plant’s 2002 release Dreamland, while all but Camara and Smith appeared on 2005’s Mighty Rearranger. The line-up for the album "lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar" recently toured the world before recording the album at Helium Studios in Wiltshire and Real World Studios in Bath, UK. The track “Rainbow” was recorded in Contino Rooms in London. Tchad Blake mixed all but three tracks on the album.

“It’s really a celebratory record, powerful, gritty, African, Trance meets Zep,” Plant says. “The whole impetus of my life as a singer has to be driven by a good brotherhood. I am very lucky to work with The Sensational Space Shifters. They come from exciting areas of contemporary music... I have been around awhile and I ask myself, do I have anything to say? Is there a song still inside me? In my heart? I see life and what’s happening to me. Along the trail there are expectations, disappointments, happiness, questions and strong relationships,” Plant explains, “... and now I’m able to express my feelings through melody, power and trance; together in a kaleidoscope of sound, colour, and friendship.”

Plant’s writing and performing reflects his infinite artistic and intellectual curiosity, fed by his global travels, with influences from West Coast psychedelic rock, roots blues, African music, and traditional American and European folk. His recent collaboration with Alison Krauss, Raising Sand, further expanded his horizons. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the album won six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. His most recent release, Band of Joy, was co-produced by Buddy Miller and revived his 1967’s band’s name. THE HONEYDRIPPERS WITH ROBERT PLANT VOLUME ONE ORIGINAL 1984  1985 ES PARANZA RECORDS AKA ATLANTIC RECORDS ISSUE EP VINYL LP OUT OF PRINT FOR 3 DECADES - I think Smokey Robinson first sang that line in "Second That Emotion." That's true here, because after you listen to this one you'll want more than five songs, and you'll want a Volume II. Whether you're a Led Zep fanatic intrigued by another Plant/Page pet project, or a nostalgic type attracted to the crooning vocals and big band sound, this is a keeper. I'm the former, and I have to say Robert Plant's vocals are transcending. Yes, it's the guy who sang "Whole Lotta Love" leading the Spectoresque wall of duop sound in the first track here, "I Get a Thrill." The Phil Phillips classic, "Sea of Love," is covered nicely: It sounds like Page & Co. took an iron to the Phillips track. "Rockin' at Midnight" is unleashed big band fun, and "I Got A Woman" does fine justice to the Ray Charles effort. And on "Young Boy Blues," Robert's voice is ethereal, matching his "Sea" try and reminiscent of earlier croons with and without Led Zeppelin, like "I'm Gonna Crawl" and "Big Log." Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and company show that great rock musicians are great musicians, period. The string sections, big band sound, beautiful arrangements, and gorgeous guitar solos underscore the tremendous talent that recreated this music. It's true that Volume I was intended to be released without the artists' identities, but fat chance with such a fine ensemble. The LP is lush, well produced, and easy to listen to. My only gripe here is that I wanted more, and indeed Volume II was never to be. Still, I must recommend it -- if you don't like it, I assure you that someone else you know will
