With only two brief albums and some demos and rehearsal tapes to draw from, the legacy of the late Ritchie Valens rests on an extremely small canon. Bob Keene managed to release two fairly decent Valens LPs on Keene's Del-Fi label, but this third LP, In Concert at Pacoima Jr. High, was literally the bottom of a very shallow barrel material-wise, consisting of six songs drawn from a poorly recorded junior high assembly concert at Pacoima Junior High in Los Angeles (including ragged versions of Valens' hits "Come On, Let's Go," "Donna," and "La Bamba"), and five studio fragments that were little more than song sketches. Mixed in are bits of totally unnecessary commentary by Keene himself, making the whole thing sound more like a radio documentary than a coherent artistic statement, and in essence, this set may be rock & roll's first official bootleg album. As such, it has some historical and archival importance, but it doesn't add up to a very good set, and in the end just illustrates the one inescapable fact about Ritchie Valens: he died too young.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split,  as follows:

-         Top seam: between 6 and 8 inches  /15 to 20 centimeters.  This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Bottom seam: between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters.

-         Spine: between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters. This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2   (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover has a small  wrinkle (bubble in paper slick) on the front panel

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
