To capitalize on Stereo-mania, which swept the nation in the late 50's and early 60's, during this period many record labels started dusting off their multi-track stereo master tapes and issuing stereo mixes of the albums which were originally only released in mono. We can be thankful to this strange phenomenon for having stereo versions of, say, Isley Brothers' "Twist and Shout" or any of the Shirelles, Ronettes, Chuck Jackson or Big Joe Turner albums.

Around 1958, Atlantic acquired stereo equipment and started recording some of their artists in 4- and 8- track stereo; and, although almost none of these would see the light of day until later, the label valiantly safeguarded the original stereo multi-track masters for later use.

Ray Charles's classic R&B singles and albums recorded for Atlantic were almost uniformly recorded, and released, in MONO only. Only a handful of his albums, of lesser historical importance, such as his live and jazz recordings, were released in stereo. Practically none of Ray Charles' recordings released prior to his final album for the label (Genius of Ray Charles) were originally released in stereo. Atlantic corrected this mistake by issuing, in 1964, the stereo-only album we are offering here, which was intended to make use of their available 8-track masters: 12 of Brother Ray's songs from the 1958-60 vintage were mixed to a gorgeous wide-channel stereo and released here, on this ultra-rare album, for the first and only time IN TRUE STEREO. To our the best of our knowledge, this album contains the one and only known true stereo (long) version of Brother Ray's classic "What'd I say" (with catcalls and all), plus a few other stereo versions available here and absolutely, positively, nowhere else. Brother Ray's classic "I believe in my soul", one of the most important, and most beautiful, soul ballads ever written, is to die for in true stereo. 

As we understand, original 8-track masters were destroyed in a massive fire that ravaged the label's New Jersey vault facility in 1971. We honestly doubt that Atlantic still holds (m)any of their original stereo masters.

And, lest we forget: not only do you get the original pressing here, but you also get the unbelievable pressing with the ATCO-style label, not previously known to exist (see the image of the label, shown below) !!!

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
