SUPER RARE 1965 MONO TEEN GARAGE ORIGINAL PRESSING!!!

                A Whole Lotta

               THE  FIVE  EMPREES

                Miss Sad

...USA - FREEPORT RECORDS

SUPER RARE 1965 first pressing VINYL on the tiny local FREEPORT label, a private press by the band from nearly 45 years ago. Filled with charming sixties jangle-guitar action, the reverb leads & rhythms are all over the place...the album is considered a prime garage collectible, seldom seen, it fetches in the $200+ in less than perfect condition. Old garage albums from the sixties are seldom found mint anyway ...part of the charm.

While there wasn't anything particularly original to be found with the FIVE EMPREES, the performances were surprisingly engaging and enthusiastic. Singer Don Cook had a surprisingly versatile voice that was capable of handling the band's diverse repetoire.  Moreover, in spite of their youth (guitarist Tony Cantania and bassist Bill Schueneman were both still in high school) on tracks such as 'Georgianna' and 'Johnny B. Goode' the band played with an enjoyable garage edge.  As is frequently the case, the best track here was the lone original.  Written by Cook and DeRose, 'Why' should've been tagged as a single and is better than most self penned teen garage tunes from the sixties

From Benton Harbor, MI (about 60 miles from Chicago), the Five Emprees had a big hit in Chicago in 1965 with "Little Miss Sad."  Driven by an infectious ascending riff, close British Invasion-influenced harmonies, and catchy rhythm that would popularize on songs like "Cherry, Cherry," "Little Miss Sad" also had some success in a few other regions, and made number 74 on the national Billboard charts. Most of the Five Emprees' scant recorded repertoire leaned heavily on cover versions, however, and they never repeated the success of "Little Miss Sad," despite recording an album and several follow-up singles through 1968. The Five Emprees originally formed in high school as "Cook and the Chefs" (named after singer Don Cook), changing their name to the Impressions and then the Five Empressions before getting a contract with the small Chicago indie label Freeport Records. Although "Little Miss Sad" was originally released under the name the Five Empressions, it was quickly changed after the famous soul group the Impressions got an injunction against them. Though originally issued as the B-side of the Debbie Dovale cover "Hey Lover" (co-written by Don Covay), it was "Little Miss Sad" that saw chart action, motivating an album (also called Little Miss Sad) in late 1965  ... here that very rare original first pressing on the local "Freeport" label ...

CONDITION: The cover is surprisingly all around solid in great shape after going on 45 years. The seams are ALL tight, the body stiff, corners sharp, no bends and there is only a faint hard to see name, believe, it won't make a distraction, hardly seen. VG++ over all. Something of a TOP level for a local teen garage album from the mid sixties.

The vinyl as well is pretty nice VG++ with, at worse, some little small hard to see short scuff/marks, nothing even close to alarming, theer is a nice shine throughout all tracks, both sides. looks like a sticker repair on one siode of label. All told, it's a solid album, cover & record ...so hard to find....1965 authentic teen garage.

A cool addition to anyone's music library!
