CRAIG CHASE VINYL Don Larter ("ccvinylman"), Owner General Policies- 1. Honest, conservative play-grading, using a strong light, high-quality stereo equipment and Goldmine standards. I emphasisize the soundof the record rather than the appearance of either the vinyl or the jacket (though appearance istaken into account):
- Sealed= Unopened and unplayed; condition unknown
- NM+= Near Mint Plus. Extraordinarily clean and quiet; may not have been played
- NM= Near Mint. Clean and quiet, regardless of scuffs or apparent defects
- NM-= Near Mint Minus. Less quiet than NM, with a bit more background noise regardless of its source.
- VG++= Very Good Plus Plus. More noise than NM-, but still highly listenable. I will specify the defects.
- VG+= Very Good Plus. Good deal of background noise, but no deep scratches and no skipping. Still highly listenable.
- Label/Data: Urania: URLP 7095, mono, red label with silver print, made in U.S.A.
- Description: This LP is rare for a number of reasons, not the least of which is because its initial release was suppressed, as is true of a small number of other recordings down through the years.
Maestro Furtwangler died just before stereo was introduced to the world on a large scale, but he is well represented on the humble monophonic LP, including this fine disk.
As one music critic put it, "Furtwangler had a special way with everything he conducted, seeking to probe that which others skimmed over. Often this resulted in much ado about nothing, but when he hit, he hit big, and this happened repeatedly in [Beethoven's] 3."
One of the orchestras with which he had a long and fruitful partnership was the Vienna Philharmonic, which plays their heart out in Beethoven's own favorite symphony. When asked what his favorite was, he responded immediately, "The Eroica!" When the questioner asked, "But what of the Fifth, Herr Beethoven, is not that your favorite?" "No, the Eroica!" he responded emphatically. Perhaps this version of this watershed symphony in the evolution of music will become your favorite after listening to Maestro Furthwangler, if it is not already. Good luck in the bidding!
- Condition of LP(s): Visual grade: VG++, for a good deal of play marks and one small, shallow scratch on side one (about one-eighth of an inch). Play grade: VG++/NM-. The aforementioned scratch on side one causes about eight or so not-so-loud ticks. Side two is quite a bit quieter than side one, and though it starts off sounding like a VG++, it improves quite quickly to a predominantly NM- side.
- Condition of Jacket/Box: Quite good. There is some yellowing on the back, and a small split in the top seam has been repaired neatly with archival quality glue. The remaining seams are intact, and both front and back are quite clean, with just a little soiling here and there.
