Description
Up for auction is this RAMONES - End of the Century LP. This is the Ramones fifth album & was originally released
on February 4th, 1980. This was the first Ramones album produced by the legendary Phil Spector. He had used more
advanced standards of engineering such as high quality overdubbing & echo chambers. This caused conflict between
Spector & the band due to the fact that these newer methods were not used on previously released albums & the band
mainly dissapproved of them. The songs on this album were primarily written to expand the band's fan base, which strayed
from the band's original Punk Genre of the previous albums, & steered towards a more Pop orientated sound. Now here's
an ironic twist on this album: It received generally positive reviews by the critics, but along with that came many reviews
deeming it less favorable than the band's previous releases. And why was that? Well, the critics who "unfavored" the album
said that the band was clearly trying too hard attempting to achieve mainstream success which was not the band's
intention at all! They wanted to make another signiture, Punk-style Ramones album, but succumbed to Phil Spector's
ideas & reccommendations for producing a more "widely accepted" album. So for that, we can easily say it was Spector's
fault, not the band's. But ironically, despite all of this, this Ramones album is the highest ranking Ramones album of all
time!! WTF? I know...the world is a strange place sometimes.
So with working with Phil Spector, the band had not achieved what they had wanted and more times than not, were
in conflict with the producer. Dee Dee claimed on numerous occasions that he was extremely controlling & wouldn't let
some of the band's contributions to the album be considered. But Dee Dee had put in some effort with writing the lyrics
to "Do You Remember Rock 'n Roll Radio?" which recalled his childhood days growing up in Germany when he used
to stay up late listening to all of the radio stations. He also wrote "Chinese Rock" in 1976, & it was later re-worded by
the popular group Johnny Thunders. Johnny disapproved of the entire album & was not happy about Spector's
production efforts or the lack of. He stated that this album was not true Ramones, but instead was a watered-down
version. Phil Spector along with other big name production advisors were trying to mainstream the album by
attempting to make every song a hit. Johnny went on to further say that you just can't do that. We're better off
making our signature Ramones album that has two hits & make the rest of the album as raunchy as hell!!
Because when it come to airplay on the Radio, the stations are only gonna play those two hits anyways &
not the 10 others. Joey was in agreement with Johnny & said that he failed to contribute his best efforts
towards this album. And furthermore Joey was quoted to saying this: "I think that some of the worst crap I ever
wrote went on that album. That was me at my worst." He also went on to say that he couldn't believe how bad it
sounded & that it was just horrible & he even felt embarrassed a little bit by the poor quality of the sound on a
couple songs. And even though some critics were quoted describing the album as "Sad", "controversial" &
a "failed effort" & that Phil Spector's production efforts pretty much ruined the album, this album currently
remains the highest charting Ramones album of all time even to this day.
This copy you are bidding on is the last Ramones album I will be listing from the "Super Saver Series". This is
a 1983 Reissue & has only been played ONE TIME & is in NEARMINT/MINT(-) condition. The inner sleeve this
time is glossy paper with the band's picture on one side & the lyrics on the other. It is in EXCELLENT shape. The
outer cardboard sleeve is in NEARMINT too & still has the original plastic shrinkwrap on it!!
