Weight of this Record: 98 grams. a light record even by late 1970s standards, but this includes superb sound quality and is cleanly pressed.

Brief Artist & Album Info: After the demise of the Sex Pistols, John (Rotton) Lydon formed PIL, a far more alternative rock unit than punk – this debut remains one of the more challenging albums from this era. Lydon is in fine form here with his usual straight in yer face vocals and content; brash and controversial as ever. Musically at times, this borders on the avant garde, the indie dub rhythms that are captivatingly powerful. At times it reminds of the Krautrock bands of the early 70s - Can and Faust spring to mind - and that should be recommendation enough. This quite intentional as Lydon is a fan of the pioneering work of the pioneering German bands of the early 1970s. The sound too is noteworthy, widely spaced out grooves with complex patterns, this will immediately inform any vinyl collector of the high intensity sounds to be expected here. This formidable PIL debut includes the self-titled hit single which has to be ranked as one of Lydon’s finest ever songs. This copy on offer has a record that appears hardly played and sounds superbly clean – not all are. The main cover has a little edge rubbing, but the graphic inner is superb also with no edge splits or creasing.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): a single unlaminated format, this has a slight semi-gloss sheen finish. It was printed in England by Robor Ltd.

Cover Front: A little edge rubbing, a few fine and light surface marks and light general rubbing seen under light. Any creases ultra fine and light near the edges, strong colour retained.

Cover Back: Any wear to the back is only very light, the main small issue is a tiny split to the left edge (approx 1 cm).

Top Edge: Mainly light patchy rubbing only.

Bottom Edge: Light to moderate (ends) rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with any thickening mild, a small split as mentioned above. Record entered on right outside edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with only a little mildish compression. Some patchy rubbing but most of the text present with just a few small character clips.

Corners: Quite light to moderate corner tip rubs, generally with fine shape.

Cover Summary: Some fairly light wear, but the inner and record make up for this. So not for the cover purist this time, but if the music and clean sound of the record is the most important factor, this offers just that.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): the unlined graphic inner is little short of as-made with no creasing, superb freshness and colour with no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb copy with just the odd faint surface trace seen under bright light, but look hard. Very clean with lovely shine and still intense black. Lightly pressed as these were, a copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. The groove patterns are highly noteworthy on this record and have to be seen to be believed, such jagged and complex grooves are quite unusual on a long playing record – more often seen on 12 inch singles or hi-fi test records. Vinyl ‘readers’ will instantly know this is a recording of the highest of high fidelity sound and is has awesome powerful and thunderous dynamics with bass-lines that will rattled the foundations. Not quite as intense as the ‘Metal Box’ follow-up on the three 45 rpm versions but at times, close. Less than worthy record players will struggle on this one and again it was fascinating watching my arm and cartridge just trying to track this record. Such is the power of this record, it will test out even better quality amps and speakers and many will simply fall apart trying. This is an awesome recording!

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super record plays up to its high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Immensely powerful, dramatic and loud and an incredible dynamic range. It plays devoid of any distortion and my speaker cloth was moving freely and the windows rattled – yes true. A fine pressing with little unwanted, any surface sounds are minimal indeed. Both channels are clean and unstressed, I feel very sure this record has been played little. Nothing spoilt this amazing experience when play-grading this highly original first PIL album. This actual record will prove very difficult to find significantly better.

Final Summary: More than just a record for the sound connoisseur, this is highly original alternative entertainment. Lydon and Wobble were inspired on this bold album, the follow-up Metal Box progressed the sound even further and became even more challenging. Possibly some Sex Pistols fans found it difficult as the sound had moved on quite some way into new areas. This is the first available copy I have had of this album for some time and even now it never fails to impress as I really like more ‘alternative’ music. My LP12 bought out the very best in this record - if you like your music with an edge, this will thrill you, Lydon’s intensity never let’s up.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
