I must have heard thousands of demos over the years but very few stand out as much as this tape. I would even go as far as saying that this is the best death metal demo to ever come out of the US. Everything from the music itself, the vocals, the production, to the packaging is all top notch. This demo was finally released on CD years later, but it always amazes me that it took so long for it to be properly recognized. The very first time I heard it I thought it was a full-length recorded in 1994-95, not some demo tape from 1990!

Trying to describe this tape's sound is a difficult task. I could call it "psychotic technical death metal", but even that would be an understatement. This demo simply must heard by anyone who craves originality in death metal and thrash. If I had to compare Psychosis to any particular bands, I would say Ripping Corpse and Impetigo. Ripping Corpse because of the crazy time changes and technical guitarwork, and Impetigo because of absolutely insane vocals of Tom May. While I will always hold Stevo's work in high regard, I really think Tom outshines him on this demo. He uses about 6 different types of vocals here: from abysmal death growls, to vomitous gurgles, to clean schizophrenic screams and absolutely everything in between. Listening to him sing will make your head spin in circles!

The guitarist is amazing. One minute he's playing some heavy death metal riff and out of nowhere he'll change to an ambitious melodic lead like it's nothing. The drummer does a great job of keeping up with the guitarist's tempo. He utilizes a variety of drumming techniques, from simple thrash beats to extreme blasting. The bassist pounds away in the background until its time to let loose a godlike solo. All of these instruments sit perfectly in the mix, giving the listener some of the best production ever heard on a debut demo. The definite stand-out tracks are "Flesheater" (arrghh, the chorus rules!!), "My Private Hell" which was later re-recorded in an even better version of the 7" of the same name, and the title track which best showcases the guitarist's versatility.

This tape will satisfy your appetite for long periods of time. Do yourself a favor and find this. Buy the tape, buy the CD, get it from a trader, get it all. You won't regret it. Psychosis awaits.
