This item is an extremely hard to find 6th pressing (according to the Record Collector Price Guide) with yellow and black Parlophone labels with "The Gramaphone Co. Ltd." and "Sold in U.K. ..... " label text, with a front laminated flip back sleeve with small "mono" on the front of the sleeve, "Printed & made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Patents pending" printed on the back of the sleeve on the flip-back (bottom right) and with the original tracing-paper-lined, "Use Emitex" die-cut inner sleeve.
What makes this item more than usually interesting, aside from it's stunning condition, is that it is (see www.beatlebay.co.uk or www.beatlescollecting.co.uk) a 6th pressing /type 3 variant distinguishable by the introduction of a 'Times' font, which changes the arrangement of the song titles and credits in the print lines (when compared with previous label variants) - for example the previous versions of the 6th pressing (variants 1 and 2) have "Northern Songs" at the end of the first line while this one only fits "Northern" onto the first line credit for "I Saw Her Standing There" on side 1. From what I understand this is the only version of 'Please Please Me' labels to use this type face.
This was the last variant of the 6th pressing, which anyway sold in diminishing numbers, when compared with the earlier pressings, given the frenetic output of the Beatles between 1963 and 1965 and the availability of more contemporary Beatles product at the time of it's sale. It is therefore a very scarce item.
The stampers at 9 o'clock on side 1 are "1 0" and at three o'clock "R R P" and at 9 o'clock on side 1 are "6" and at three o'clock "G D".
The matrix codes on side 1 are: "XEX 421 - 1 N" and on side 2 are: "XEX 422 - 1 >I" - the ">I" being an over-stamp which looks like a Y or back to front K but may simply be a stamp mark in the vinyl to remove a previously stamped letter.
Condition
Vinyl : - excellent + : there are a couple of light surface marks, but no scratches - there are a couple of light marks in the run out grooves - the vinyl looks to be little played and retains a beautiful 'as new' lustre. I have play graded the vinyl and there is no deterioration in the sound quality such as would be associated with a record that has been overplayed, on the contrary the sound is fresh and bright and powerful - there are no audible imperfections apart from the sound of the needle starting and ending the play - and a little background noise between the tracks - I played the record loud using headphones and the punchy mono sound of the early Beatles is wonderfully conveyed.
Labels : - both labels are in excellent condition - there is very slight spindle wear and a few unobtrusive spindle marks on side 2- there are some light unobtrusive pressure marks on side 2 and a couple of very light 'thumb marks' - otherwise there are no other imperfections;
Sleeve : - excellent + difficult to fault : front - very very light wear to the bottom opening corner - 2 small surface creases tangential to the top end of the spine and a small surface crease near the opening edge - the very slightest suggestion of surface wear just bellow the "o" in "other" - otherwise the front is clean and bright , otherwise the corners and edges are sharp and clean - almost immaculate; back - the back is clean and bright apart from a printed 'D1' in faint blue ink, next to the "PMC 1202" (which looks to me like a retailers mark), a couple of very small light brown spots on the opening edge and a couple of light unobtrusive pressure marks. The spine has no blemishes or imperfections at all, not even any creasing or wear at all - likewise with the other edges - all the print is clearly visible - otherwise no tears, splits, writing, marks or other major imperfections.
The inner sleeve is in excellent + condition with slight creasing.
