Label/Format: MGM – matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing. Also with a fine spotted pattern to the solid colour. The most important factor, this copy is a very first pressing with the MGM-CS-8120 catalogue number. Most offered have the 2354040 number which is a second or later pressing.

Label Conditions: Both generally clean and attractive, a little dull spotting seen with angled viewing, this mostly on side one. Spindle marks are just a little over light, but mostly fine and faint. Overall, this elusive genuine first issue plays great with little to fault and has a nice attractive cover. All differences between this and the reissue are mentioned further down in more detail.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good solid weight, again reissues are invariably thinner.

Rarity: Quite rare as a genuine first UK pressing. This album when issued sold in little more than minuscule numbers. Quickly deleted, then repressed with the new 2354040 number. So beware of repressings being offered as originals or first issues – only those with the MGM-CS-8120 number are. But that is not the only difference. First issues have a laminated front cover with three rear external flipbacks as seen on my picture. Second or later issues have a fully matt cover with a smooth non-flipback cover back. In any form, this is a scarce album, but originals are seldom seen or offered, they only being available for the briest of time. More interest from collectors was shown as The Pink Floyd name became popular and widespread.

Brief Info: ‘Zabriskie Point’ is a 1970 film by Michelangelo Antonioni, it was not received well by the reviewers of the day and it sunk without trace. Time has been kinder and reappraised more favourably. I am not a film reviewer and have not even seen this one before. The music included on the album is superb, and on that I am far more interested. It includes three important songs by the early Pink Floyd. The final song ‘Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up’, is an alternative take on ‘Careful With That Axe Eugene’ with even more manic screams – this is ‘Ummagumma’ era Floyd at their most experimental (and best). Other material is varied with some great songs by Garcia and his Grateful Dead, also featured are the US version of Kaleidoscope amongst some interesting others. A fantastic album that was unfortunately as popular as the movie at the time of release, hence very few sold or even noticed. This is the real deal – a first UK issue from 1970 – with all the correct packaging and numbers. Overall, a very impressive example, and the first I have seen for ages. A few fine marks on side one, around half-a-dozen gentle ticks noted and not a great deal else. The sound, detail and clarity is top-drawer and the material is impressive. Clearly of immense interest for Pink Floyd collectors with two unique songs and (arguably) the finest version of ‘Careful With That Axe Eugene’ under a different name. Being honest, there is not a track on this soundtrack I do not like, I consider it essential, and for collectors, a rare opportunity to own a first issue than the more familiar 1973 repressing.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better. A single format with the front laminated. This covers all the folds and ends on three external rear flipbacks as seen. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse (later ones by Robor), this has (of course) the correct MGM-CS-812 catalogue number. The Polydor-style lined inner sleeve is included that is date-coded 1/0570 (May 1970).

Cover Front: A lovely looking front with any issues gentle and light. The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and no minimal hint of dulling. Under light a couple of gentle press marks and very fine rim impression that few can hope to avoid as a bare minimum. A little fine and light creasing shows little, most near the bottom left corner area. The only hint of ageing is a little light toning to the exposed card strip on the right where the laminate ends. Colour is fantastic with no fading, this now famous graphic will seldom be seen better – and, of course, with the lamination, it looks way better than the matt version with the colour more intense and fully protected.

Cover Back: A little mostly gentle toning or faint spotting, this mostly to the left edge, so giving only scant clues to its considerable age. Overall, the main back panel has fared well with hardly any hint of rubbing, creasing or grubbiness. The three flipbacks are all solid and clean with minimal burring or grime to their ends. A little laminate creasing on them but no lifting or damage. A very fine back to more than complement the impressive front.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight with no rubbing or chipping, in fact this is close to as-made.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same with just a tiny tone spot trace.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with minimal thickening or burring. Record enters on this edge, no trimming or enhancements guaranteed.

Spine and Text: Solid mainly straight with any compression light, the ends are deeply pinched in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under solid clear laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubbing tiny and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no bashes or noteworthy dinks.

Cover Summary: An unusual pleasure to offer a true original first cover (and record) for this elusive ‘lost’ gem. Overlooked, unnoticed and elusive, and now a rare collector’s piece, essential for Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead fans. This will seldom be seen or offered and this a lovely example to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Polydor-style inner sleeve marked down only for moderate age toning of the adhesive areas of the sides. Two crisp unworn window circles and intact quite clear lining. Mildish corner creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This one date-coded 1/0570 (May 1970).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: or thereabouts. A very fine visual copy even though there are a few fine mostly surface marks on side one – then the usual ultra fine wispy traces seen under bright angled light. Still very clean with lovey shine, freshness and solidly pressed. Half-a-dozen or so light ticks from one, little else, and the vast majority of this record plays superbly. Certainly lacking the crackle I have encountered on later repressings, this is beautifully and cleanly pressed with the best sound heard thus far. Not for the absolute visual purist or ultra fussy listener with a tiny few light, brief blemishes, but this still very impressive record will take a lot of beating and many collectors will treasure it.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This ‘lost’ first pressing copy plays above its visual grading with very little to fault bar the brief few gentle and light ticks mentioned above. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds are minimal and faint, overall an exceptional clean pressing – and not all MGM records were – the first issues, in most cases offer the best detail, dynamic range and quietness. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played relatively little and especially viewed in normal room light, looks lovely. Very little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Strong recommendation applies unless total perfection is mandatory from a first issue 1970 record – good luck with that for this poor-selling record.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
