Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with barely a spindle trace to be seen – one on side 1, barely a trace on side 2.

Cat Number: 2315002 (this is a first repress).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 125 grams. Around average for it’s era.

Rarity: First pressed copies of this album are quite rare and highly undervalued in the price guides (now there’s a surprise!). Only later, as Pink Floyd became a major selling band, did more discover this obscure soundtrack that included three unique cuts by them. By then, the record has been repressed and the cover format changed. Only the originals have laminated fronts and three rear flipbacks. Repressings, as this one, had a standard matt cover and were flat-backed, these are less rare but still not that abundant, especially in top condition, this album is now highly sort-after by Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead fans. The fact it’s not a very first issue is more than compensated by this record’s condition, it’s little short of immaculate and plays superbly. This is a total UK pressing and cover, it could easily pass for new, one destined for US export – this still retains it’s original shrinkwrap and import sticker. The original US price sticker is still attached ($5.99). I do not know the history of this copy, but clearly, it made it’s way back to these shores to again be enjoyed here – I say ‘enjoyed’, buy it looks hardly even played. A beautiful piece for the 70s decade and for Pink Floyd fans in particular, this is a priceless piece whichever pressing it is when found like this.

Original Year of Release: 1970. This was likely pressed in 1971, as confirmed by the date-coded original inner, more information on that further down.

Brief Info: ‘Zabriskie Point’ is a 1970 film by Michelangelo Antonioni, it was not received well by the reviewers of the day and it sunk without trace. Time has been kinder now, and reappraised more favourably. I am not a film reviewer and have not even seen this one before. The music included on the album is superb, and on that I am far more interested. It includes three important songs by the early Pink Floyd. The final song ‘Come in Number 51, Your Time is Up’, is an alternative take on ‘Carefuly With That Axe Eugene’ with even more manic screams – this is ‘Ummagumma’ era Floyd at their most experimental. Other material is varied with some great songs by Garcia and his Grateful Dead, also featured are the US version of Kaleidoscope amongst some interesting others. A fantastic album that was unfortunately as popular as the movie at the time of release, hence few sold and being honest is not that easy to locate as a first repress, especially with a record this clean. This is one time has over-looked, as did I guess the original owner. The record almost reminds of new and the cover has barely aged at all, still being protected by it’s wrapping for export. The sound is superb and easily matches the first press which I had downloaded to CD for my own future use. This is truly a copy for the Floyd connoisseur and I can hardly imagine finding this early first, second issue better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single, unlaminated format and made with fairly thin card. This one was exported to the United States in shrinkwrap, this has been retained but (obviously) opened. The wrap has a US price sticker on the front and the back of the card has a import sticker. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd.

Front: With only the right edge area ever exposed, this front is practically as made. A tiny tip crease on the bottom right corner and slight burr traces on the edge (being critical).

Cover Back: The back is similar, the top of the shrinkwrap has split but again, the cover has minimal areas exposed. A small tip crease to the top right corner and a lesser one opposite, the same burring on the lower part of this opening edge. All else looks superb and still untouched.

Top Edge: Appears largely as made, so little has been exposed.

Bottom Edge: As above, even less exposed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly sharp, the minor burr trace mostly seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: As made, fully covered with unsplit shrinkwrap, all text Mint of course.

Corners: Small tip creases on the right exposed pair, the left are still covered and look fine to me.

Cover Summary: I strongly doubt if many of these will still be found inside their original shrinkwrap. I was tempted to remove it to expose this fantastic clean cover, but many like this retained if possible. I emphasise again, this is a UK-made cover shipped for export to the United States and the record is UK pressed too. Considering this has been overseas and back, the lack of wear and damage is commendable, a rare opportunity for collectors.

The Inner: EXCELLENT: marked down a little for mild edge toning and slight ageing. This is lined and has two immaculate crisp windows, minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. date coded 70 11.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): this being ultra critical. The odd small mark or surface trace but try finding this fresher, cleaner or better. Probably played once or twice most. An impressive visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A visual delight for all collectors to enjoy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This largely overlooked record plays up to its high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds or clicks minimal, light and few – an album with some quiet passages so total silene is a hugely and near unrealistic ask. This ticks all the positive boxes and will prove difficult to find better for looks or sound, remember too what I play-grade my records on, little escapes. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, barely even run-in in vinyl terms, and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to match let alone find better and can be highly recommended.

All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional VPI-17 vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
