Brief Info: ‘Neu’ is the German word for ‘new’, and this duo created a very new and original sound in progressive rock music. Rother and Dinger were former members of Kraftwerk, when they left they formed Neu! Now offering a very new sound using more conventional rock instruments, but with a real edge and progressive sound in the Krautrock genre. They continued to work with Conny Plank who had produced the early Kraftwerk albums. This was Neu’s second album and they went on to make one more on United Artists – all are great albums. Influential, even groundbreaking, they are highly regarded and all quite elusive as UK originals. Side one follows the same format as the classic debut album. Side two divided opinions more: funds ran low and the music on this side are various treated versions of a previously released single. The very beginning of this side can easily fool anyone not familiar. It sounds like a couple of unwanted tracking faults, then a stylus placed on the record, but this is purely correct within the recording, the CD version is exactly the same. But this ‘fault’ sound is very convincing, intentionally so as a spoof. This a fine copy that appears hardly played, cleanly pressed and plays impressively, the cover has a scuff on the front right edge.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(+): overall impressive, but with a rub/scuff as mentioned on the front right side. An unlaminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the UA inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Both sides quite similar bar the moderate rub/scuff on the front right edge as mentioned. Unprotected and prone to wear and grubbiness, this has little. Any traces light and little with minimal creasing. A gentle trace of rim impression on the back. The front flaw apart, both sides are quite impressive.

Cover Inside: A fairly light adhesive mark on the top right edge, almost certainly from manufacture, this has little else to fault.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four edges are straight and near flush with barely any wear at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of thickening. Record enters on the back edge, the front is closed, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the white surface with minimal wear or grubbiness. All text is perfect and unworn, also nicely centred.

Corners: All corners are superb with barely anything to fault and no knocks.

Cover Summary: Even with the front scuff, still a nice example of this quite elusive cover, one that rarely wears well. Not for purists, but many collectors will be pleased.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the unlined UA inner sleeve has fairly lightly aged. The colour a little lightened over time and traces of toning near the edges with a small stain spot on the back. A fine crease also on the back, all edges solidly intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surface marks few, very fine and faint as seen under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches and viewed in average room light, hardly anything registers. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Krautrock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd sporadic click here-and-there is near impossible to avoid on an album with some very quiet passages – but overall, a clean and impressive copy no tracking issues*. PLEASE NOTE: the beginning of side two has a spoof ‘damage’ sound that can easily fool any unsuspecting listener into thinking the record jumps. But NOT the case, this is perfectly normal and intentional, it even has a stylus sound being placed on to a record after the two fake jumps. The CD version is exactly the same. Few available copies will outperform this UK original I feel sure. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality album. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
