Brief Artist & Album Info: This still has to Pink Floyd’s most underrated and often under-appreciated work, ‘Atom Heart Mother’ was a very brave experimental piece. Partially written with avant-garde composer, Ron Geesin and produced by Norman Smith and beautifully engineered by Alan Parsons. It featured the first in a series of impressive album covers, designed by the Hipgnosis studio, none of which featured photographs of the band on the front. The album’s first side is taken up with the title track broken down into six segments. Brass, choir, strings and sound effects are used throughout including a high powered motorbike near the beginning which roars from speaker to speaker, also horses and a high-speed train – all interesting for the audiophile listener. Side two offers four songs, the first three gentle more familiar period piece Floyd. ‘Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast’ is pretty strange however – a full English with a difference. A highly challenging record with so many quiet passages, so many first issues written-off from less-than-worthy, basic record players of the time. Overall, this copy plays very well, a little surface sound immensely difficult to avoid and traces here-and-there. A couple or revs of hiss was heard very briefly on side one, that I can only imagine within the pressing itself, it proved to be a one-off. The cover is as uncompromising as the record, and this one has aged a little with mainly edge rubbing, but it is the original which has subtle differences to later ones. So not a copy for the more discerning collector, but these genuine first issues are getting harder-and-harder to find, and this is still a very decent example that will please many.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Includes the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A famous front cover, this one only lightly aged with a little very mild discolouration. The only wear as such being near the very edges, this mainly near the top. Minimal traces of any creasing and equally few marks. Excellent colour and no sticker issues, all highly respectable for a challenging sleeve.

Cover Back: Largely the same with just a gentle hint of rim impression.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside. Note the close-up of the imprint text on the bottom left edge. This correctly states: 7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent No. 943.895 SHVL 781. Later printings, which appear almost exactly the same omit parts of this text.

Top Edges: Moderate rubbing, no splits and straight.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with a little light wear. Light thickening and minor burring as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. However this has moderate patchy rubbing/scuffing, mostly near the top area with some text characters eroded or clipped.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with good shape.

Cover Summary: A rarer first-made cover, but with some wear, so not for the more discerning collector. But with a very low starting bid, this early copy will appeal to a number of collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: The Harvest promotional inner looks Excellent (at least), but has the lining missing, that hardly unusual on these. Gently aged only and hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit (with no repairs). The lining the only issue really.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): a fine visual copy that is still very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Played a few times, but even under bright angled light, any surface marks are fine, whispy and very light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches, thus sound for the vast majority, is impressive and mostly clean. As stated above, there is a very brief hissing sound on side one that comes and goes with a second or so. Visually a lovely vintage record that should please many collectors, but again, not for the highly discerning this time.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This pre-EMI first issue copy plays for most above it’s visual grading with little to fault. Mainly strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal (the hiss sound apart as mentioned again) and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few, if any originals will play ‘silent’, that is an immense task on what is one of the most challenging and difficult Pink Floyd albums. So the odd sporadic click or surface sound is almost to be expected especially if played on more sensitive equipment. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Floyd gem, still an under-appreciated one I feel. Not perfect, but still mostly impressive, it merits recommendation and could be a great bargain copy.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
