Label/Format: Harvest – first issue with no EMI logo and ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ rim text. These have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and still attractive. Just one or two ultra fine and faint spindle traces (actually used a magnifying glass to spot them). One owner from new, he told me he only played this record once or twice and “did not like it”. So it was simply stored and left alone, after viewing and play-grading this always difficult and challenging record, I would not doubt the claim for a second. This record is beautiful, barely marked at all and with sound to match. This simply has to be the cleanest sounding and least played standard first-issue UK copy I have yet offered.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A typical more solid weight for this earlier pressing. Later EMI logo label copies were usually thinner.

Rarity: Moderate: first issue copies harder to find. In this superb, hardly played condition, they are rare and finding such clean examples is very difficult indeed. Although a less popular album (for some) in the Pink Floyd catalogue, most of the early ones seen are often ruined by usage on very basic, often heavy tracking mono record players, and the sound destroyed accordingly. Finding one – like this – hardly even run-in in vinyl terms, is a massive task, and this one is superbly pressed and offers wonderful clean sound throughout. A complex album in terms of sound quality and quiet passages, few survive like this. Indeed such is the quality of this record, it could prove a substantial upgrade for many. The equally challenging cover is also in very fine condition, minor shelf wear, but it will better most genuine first printed covers for sure. Even the Harvest promotional inner is hugely impressive. This example is one that will truly be very hard to find better and a rare opportunity for Pink Floyd fans and collectors.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This still has to Pink Floyd’s most underrated and often under-appreciated work, ‘Atom Heart Mother’ was a very brave experimental piece. Partially written with avant-garde composer Ron Geesin and produced by Norman Smith and beautifully engineered by Alan Parsons. It featured the first in a series of impressive album covers, designed by the Hipgnosis studio, none of which featured photographs of the band on the front. The album’s first side is taken up with the title track broken down into six segments. Brass, choir, strings and sound effects are used throughout including a high powered motorbike near the beginning which roars from speaker to speaker, also horses and a high-speed train – all interesting for the audiophile listener. Side two offers four songs, the first three gentle more familiar period piece Floyd. ‘Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast’ is pretty strange however – a full English with a difference. A highly challenging record with so many quiet passages, so many first issues written-off from less-than-worthy, basic record players of the time. This copy plays beautifully with hardly anything of note to fault. Certainly up there with the very best I have ever heard as a UK first issue, the cover the same. I doubt if this record has seen light-of-day for decades, and superbly pressed as well – not all were. I have always been a big fan of this album, I much prefer Pink Floyd’s earlier, more experimental albums prior to going more commercial after ‘Dark Side of the moon’. This one should please most fans and collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better for a very uncompromising format. An unlaminated gatefold with matt, smooth surfaces. This one made with very thin, almost flimsy card and includes the correct imprint details as seen in close-up on the inside left bottom corner area. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Includes the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A famous front cover and here looking very impressive. A light pressure rub trace near the right edge and the odd very faint surface crease seen under light – little else. Any marks or blemishes tiny, hardly any and faint. This retains lovely colour and has hardly really aged at all.

Cover Back: Largely the same with just a gentle hint of rim impression on the left and bottom edge. With many seen with heavy ringwear, creasing and grubbiness, this almost has to be considered exceptional. Both outer faces will prove very hard to find much better these days on a first issue format cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely anything to fault inside. Note the close-up of the imprint text on the bottom left edge. This correctly states: 7010 TPS Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd Patent No. 943.895 SHVL 781. Later printings, which appear almost exactly the same omit parts of this text.

Top Edges: Mainly very straight, resting flat and neatly close to flush with barely any rubbing at all.

Bottom Edges: Largely as above, except the back right corner area has rubbed, lesser so elsewhere. The front edge has barely any wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both edges clean, mostly very sharp with barely any wear. Even viewed end-on, hardly any traces of thickening or burring. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Again impressive for an area well-known not to age or wear well. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and near parallel. Apart from a tiny rub clip trace to the ‘A’ in ‘Atom’, all other characters are perfect and unworn as seen in close-up. Any rubbing to the main face or fold hinges tiny, very slight and faint, these seldom get much better these days.

Corners: The bottom right back corner has rubbed to match the rubbing on that edge described above. All others have minimal traces and retain excellent or even better shape with no dinks or knocks.

Cover Summary: A rarer first-made cover, and with the general lack of wear, one that will appeal to the more discerning collectors. Not perfect, but it still sets the bar very high. These are getting increasingly difficult to find as such.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a superb Harvest promotional inner that retains the polylining. ‘Clean Inner, Clean Record’ rarely applied more. This is little short of as-made with just one gentle corner crease (or it would have been Mint(–) as well. Only faint seam adhesive darkening that is rarely, if ever avoided totally and clean and still fresh. All edges unsplit (the corners vented in manufacture) with no repairs, they seldom get seen better than this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a superb visual copy that is still very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. As stated further up, played no more than once or twice by the one-and-only original owner – he did not like it apparently – and it was stored carefully away for many years largely untouched. Even surface traces are minuscule when viewed critically under my very bright desk grading lamp, finding a cleaner, less ‘used’ first label copy will prove beyond difficult. A strong contender for a huge upgrade, this will be hard to better for looks and sound.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This pre-EMI first issue copy plays up to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and barely anything of note was heard, and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few, if any originals will play ‘silent’, that is an immense task on what is one of the most challenging and difficult Pink Floyd albums. But this is probably as close as I have personally heard from any UK copy – I sold a Japan pressing some while ago that was immaculate, but UK copies were pressed in greater numbers and rarely will they play so clean. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Floyd gem, still an under-appreciated one I feel. This record really will prove very difficult to find better and more than merits my highest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
