Description
This is a superb find and incredibly rare. On offer here is a stunning first ever mono G1/G1 pressing of 'A Saucerful Of Secrets' and has the earliest ever matrix numbers for this album. This one is among the first 300-500 that were ever pressed and to find it in this condition is so rare! I am not one to exaggerate but I am confident in saying that this must be in the top 2% of those remaining, perhaps even better, the quality is quite simply astounding. Of course it goes without saying that this has the famous blue/black Columbia labels also.
The technical jargon - the letter denotes the stamper and generally only 300-500 records were pressed with each stamper.
The stamper codes used by Columbia/EMI Records is based on "Gramophone Ltd" ie G=1 R=2 A=3 M=4 O=5 P=6 H=7 L=8 T=9 D=0
A record with a "G" stamper letter indicates that the record was made from the first stamper. Later pressings may have stamper numbers in combination, such as "AL" which means 38. So you can see that the 'Saucerful' I am selling is made from the first stamper/number and so therefore is extremely rare and , I reiterate, rarer still to find in this superlative condition.
Visual grading
Visually it is absolutely superb and my play grading below confirms this. Under a strong bright light I can see some faint hairlines but I am sure they are more due to sleeve removal than anything else. They do not have any affect on the audio. I cannot stress just how how fantastic this extremely rare first ever mono pressing looks and sounds! It actually retains that glossy look of new vinyl such is its quality. Maybe I'm stupid in starting this at such a low price but hey let's see where it goes :-)
As confirmed on pinkfloydarchives.com G1/G1 are the first ever matrices for this LP. It obviously has the blue/black Columbia label - complete with E.J. Day flipback laminated cover.

Play grading
Side One begins with no lead in static! 'Let There Be More Light' plays with stunning clarity and barely no background interference. There are three faint clicks half way through but that is it. There is almost zero static. The clarity and depth of the sound is amazing for a record pressed nearly 50 years ago! 'Remember A Day' continues with the same quality. 'Set The Controls...' has the faintest of static at the beginning but soon disappears but I'm not sure why I'm mentioning it really as you can barely hear it! This version is absolutely stunning and without doubt one of the best I have heard. I think I heard one very faint click, no more, and again almost no static. 'Corporal Clegg' plays extremely well but with some distortion but I am playing it through my stereo system which would account for that as it is the louder of the tracks on this side.
'Saucerful...' starts Side Two with (once again!) hardly any static. The audio throughout is breathtakingly good. There is absolute minimal static when the organ begins but there are no skips, jumps or clicks and was an absolute pleasure to listen to. When you consider how quiet a lot of this side is the audio is so crisp and clear you would think you were listening to an LP recently pressed. You also get almost complete silence between tracks. 'See-Saw' and 'Jugband Blues' once again play with wonderfully clarity and almost no crackle.
For nearly 50 years of age you expect some deterioration in audio quality. However, this is without doubt the best first pressing of this age I have ever sold. When you consider I was playing a Mono LP through my stereo system the audio is absolutely stunning and could only improve even when played on a Mono system. This LP has been lovingly looked after for nearly half a century so if the avid Pink Floyd audiophile wants to upgrade to a true archive copy with amazing audio then this is the one to own. As stated this pressing is incredibly rare and quite possibly the best of its kind today. Yes a massively bold statement to make but I have had the pleasure in listening to it and could not believe my ears!
Cover
Unsurprisingly the laminated Ernest J. Day flipback cover is in excellent condition. The edges and spine are in superb condition with the only wear being a very small area on the bottom edge. The corners have minimal wear which is incredibly rare. The laminate has some creasing on the right hand side but it is only minor. So often the laminate is damaged especially with first presses but not this one. There is some light handling wear on the opening edge. On the reverse the flipbacks has to be the best I have seen. There is no dirt or staining which you often see, just a couple of minor marks. On the flipback top right is 'File under Popular : Pop Groups' with the Mono catalogue number SX 6258 underneath. Overall a wonderful first press Mono cover with only slight shelf wear.
Labels
The rare blue/black labels are in superb condition with a little spindle wear and no marks or writing at all. Gilmour is written as "GILMORE" on both the record label and cover. The first track on Side One is misspelled as "Let There Me More Light". All tracks are credited to Magdalene Music as per the first pressings.
As stated on the label "Made in GT Britain" and around the bottom edge is -
"The Gramophone Co., Ltd. All rights of the manufacturer and of the owner of the recorded work reserved. Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting, and copying of this record prohibited"
Inner sleeve
This LP contains the first inner sleeve that was available on this pressing. It is cream coloured and is advertising Herman's Hermits and The Beatles "Revolver" amongst others. It is in excellent condition for its age with only two small splits.
Play tested on my Technics SL-J110R turntable system.
