Pink Floyd : A Saucerful Of Secrets 1/1 1st Stereo Press Blue COLUMBIA Single Stampers!
This very collectable first pressing plays with a clarity and depth you so rarely find today. In a sense this is not surprising when you see how visually stunning the vinyl is but it still needs to have been preserved well for it to play with its original sonic quality and I can confirm it has been! There is barely any interference - just one minor static 'hiss' near the beginning of S2 that lasts for a millisecond only and a little inner groove distortion at the end of S1 but as described below this is very common on this classic album. There are no clicks or pops and barely any static, a few seconds worth that is all which is so quiet and totally non-intrusive. There are so many quiet sections and yet the clarity of sound is just stunning, the audio is so 'clean' and fresh. The two obvious examples are 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' and of course the title track. You would be hard pressed to find a better version than this! It has clearly not been played too much and that is reflected in the audio quality.
The laminated Patents Pending cover is in fantastic condition with barely any wear and is quite possibly the best example I have ever seen. The inner sleeve is also in excellent shape advertising Sgt. Peppers and Piper amongst others.
This is also one of the earlier first pressings as it has only a single stamper on each side - H on S1 and P on S2.

Visual description
The vinyl is in exceptional condition and still has an immaculate glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can only see a small number of ultra faint sleeve removal hairlines and they obviously has no affect on the stunning quality of the audio. There is no groove wear or 'dulling' of the surface and the run out grooves are also extremely clean. The iconic blue Columbia labels are unmarked and have only a little spindle wear on each side. This version has no KT tax stamp on either label. It is visually STUNNING and rarely seen as impressive as this.
Play grading
The entire intro on 'Let There Be More Light' plays with stunning clarity where each note is so clean and precise and there is no intrusion on the audio. The perfect start! The opening vocal is just as impressive and the first chorus is of the same standard. It continues in the same precise way without any background - no ticks, clicks, pops or static and the sonic quality is superb throughout. The psychedelic end instrumental is a prime example of that and for once there is no static distortion across the entire track. This is Mint I can pay it no higher compliment. Even the fade out is super clean!
'Remember A Day' keeps up this fine start and plays with great quality from the get go. The intro is faultless and Wright's first vocal is as good as it would have been in '68! From then on the clarity of sound is incredible and this is very obvious during the quieter passages where there is no hiding place. There are no dust ticks let alone anything more. The audio definition is so strong with no 'muddiness' to the sound at all. This classic album has clearly been so well preserved down the years and not overplayed either. Every vocal and instrumental section play with exceptional quality and I am confident in grading this Mint also, it is a stunning version.
With complete silence in the dead wax the super quiet intro on 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' plays beautifully with only a couple of barely audible dust ticks. The clarity of sound during Waters' opening vocal is so impressive and this quality is kept up as it progresses. It plays so clearly and the first repeated heart of the sun... plays so clearly with barely any of the static distortion that you so often find. The following instrumental has only a handful of very quiet dust ticks and there is nothing that gets in the way of the actual 'listen'. The final vocal is perfect and the remainder plays with great quality also, just a touch of minor background static but again very quiet. The fade out has no background. I think ranging between Near Mint and Mint is a fair reflection of the audio.
'Corporal Clegg' of course always plays with some static / inner groove distortion and it is just a matter of how much. In essence you cannot escape it as it is just synonymous with this pressing. However, I am pleased to say it is kept to a minimum here another sign this vinyl has not been over-played. The intro is very clean and the opening vocal has only the bare minimum of distortion but still plays exceptionally well. From then on it plays so clearly and the instrumental sections in particular play with tremendous power and depth. Overall the vocals are very strong and I only mention the distortion to be 100% 'complete' with my grading. Perhaps I am being too critical because like I say you expect but please believe when I say it is totally non-intrusive here! There is basically no interference from start to finish and the final instrumental is superb. I am going to grade as Near Mint and it is definitely one of the cleanest versions you are ever likely to hear with no ticks, clicks or pops getting in the way of the audio.

The intro on 'A Saucerful Of Secrets' is so quiet and yet clarity. There is one momentary quiet static hiss just after 20 seconds but that is the only intrusion on this opening section. There are no ticks, clicks or pops and no underlying static either. As the volume builds the sonic quality is stunning and there is no static distortion on the top end, the clarity of sound is incredible! As Mason comes in around the 4 minute mark the playback is 'as new' and this entire percussive section then plays with STUNNING clarity and warmth. There is a lot 'going on' here and yet the clarity has not been affected by the passage of time and each note is again so clean and precise. As this section ends the next super quiet piece plays beautifully and the beginning of the organ 'recital' could not play any better - honestly the clarity is just amazing! You can hear all the 'percussive' elements in the background perfectly - there is literally no background, well a couple of dust ticks at most - and the solo organ / bass section is again STUNNING! This is quite simply one of the finest versions of this classic that I have ever listened to and the choral section plays with wonderful clarity and depth also. A couple of dust ticks but the overall sonic 'landscape' could not be any more impressive and as it builds the playback is fantastic. Right to very end the audio is so clean and fresh and again there is no distortion on the top end. I will grade the intro as Near Mint but the rest of this iconic 'instrumental' has to be grade as Mint- at the very least. What a version!
'See-Saw' plays with great clarity and this is rare as this track is so often affected by a 'muddy' type sound I find. The intro is perfect as is the opening vocal and it continues to play with remarkable quality when you consider the age of the album. From start to finish there is no interference and whilst I do not want to repeat myself the clarity here is phenomenal. Sit back and imagine yourself back in the halcyon days of late 60s psychedelia! There are no clicks or pops and only a handful of barely audible dust ticks. This is Mint- in every way and I'm not sure the minus is required truth be told.
'Jugband Blues' completes this classic album with stunning clarity and depth and warmth, no surprise there! There is no inner groove distortion and it plays with a genuine warmth and resonance also. Barrett's vocal is so clear and the instrumental sections are 'as new' also. The final instrumental is flawless and the emotive end vocal has just one very quiet tick. A superb Mint- version and a fitting end to Barrett's time with the band.
In summary this first pressing plays to a standard you so rarely find today. The clarity and depth of the audio on both sides is stunning and there is barely any interference. One very brief static hiss at the beginning of S1 and a modicum of inner groove distortion on the final track on S1 which is commonplace anyway as stated. There are no clicks or pops and the vinyl is visually stunning also. When I first looked at the record I was hoping it would play well and it certainly did not disappoint! The sonic quality is outstanding and in conjunction with a lovely cover this will add to any high end collection.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The laminated G & L Patents Pending cover is in lovely condition and is easily one of the finest examples I have seen. The edges and thin pinched spine are in perfect order and only the bottom right corner has a minimal amount of wear / rubbing. The opening edge has only minimal handling wear. The front cover is superb with no laminate damage and just one tiny crease next to the right edge and a couple of barely visible creases next to the spine. The unlaminated back cover has been so well preserved and has no marking / fading and the flipbacks remain firmly attached to the cover with none of the marking / staining that you so often see on the edges. This cover has retained its original shape and structure so well and has clearly not been handled very much - it seriously is a superb example of this iconic cover.
The original EMI inner is in great condition with just one very small side split and has barely any marking and only minimal creasing.
Play tested on my Rega P2 with Rega Carbon Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers
