Description

Pink Floyd : A Momentary Lapse Of Reason A3/B1 1st Press

This very early pressing from '87 has a depth and power that you rarely find today and S1 especially is stunning.  There is only a little interference on S2, mainly on a couple of fade outs, but the vast majority still plays with superb quality.  Judging by the audio clarity and lack of spindle wear this record has only been played very infrequently.

The gatefold and lyric inner are in sublime condition and it is clear they have hardly been handled.  Superb examples.

Visual grading

The vinyl is in superb order with a stunning glossy sheen and no obvious marking at all.  S1 is in fantastic condition and I can only detect a handful of very faint sleeve removal hairlines and S2 is the same with just one minor hairline scratch also.  There is hardly any spindle wear and the run out grooves and labels are super clean with no marks.

Play grading

This version of 'Signs Of Life' has to be one of the most impressive I have heard in a long time.  As any Floyd collector knows this opening instrumental often plays with a lot of 'background' and I mean a lot!  The quiet intro begins with only minimal static with just a little more as the music starts.  Still only very minor though.  As the music builds the playback is stunning and can hardly be faulted!  The guitar/synth section then plays with wonderful depth no interference.  The clarity is exceptional and I repeat this track is just never this 'clean'!  Maybe the odd mega light dust tick but there is no intrusive 'background' of any kind.  I would say Ex on the intro but the remainder is undoubtedly Near Mint in my opinion.  A superb start to the album.

'Learning To Fly' plays with Mint audio from start to finish.  Having played every second I am confident in this grade as there is not even a dust tick let alone anything more.  The quieter middle section has no 'background' and the fade out also plays to perfection.  Wow!

'The Dogs Of War' has only a couple of dust ticks on the intro and is as close to audio perfection that you will find.  This incredible clarity continues into the vocal and the entire track plays with a wonderful definition and power.  The 'high octane' guitar/sax section has no distortion which is a rarity and points to a record that has been hardly played if at all!  This is Mint- the audio is of a sublime standard.

The intro on 'One Slip' plays extremely well with only the bare minimum of mega light static and then plays with immaculate clarity and strength for the remainder.  Once more there is no interference at all not even on the fade out.

The classic 'On The Turning Away' exudes quality from the very first note.  The quiet intro is so impressive with only a handful of barely audible dust ticks and as the acoustic guitar comes in the playback is 'as new'.  This wonderful quality is prevalent throughout and even the quiet middle section has no interference.  The 'choral' section is perfect and the soaring solo then plays with a power that is second to none.  Perhaps a mild hint of inner groove distortion but no more than you would find on an unplayed 1987 version.  This is a stunning version and the fade out is also flawless.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The opening few grooves on 'Yet Another Movie' similarly plays with some 'background' - it just always seems to be the case with this pressing even on one hardly played.  There is a little static and 3/4 static ticks also but in no way is it overpowering and the music can still be heard very clearly.  It soon decreases and as the volume increases the audio is so strong with barely any 'background'.  As Gilmour's vocal starts the audio is Mint and that brief mid instrumental section?  Seriously just turn the volume up to max I have just never heard such awesome dynamic power!  The depth and overwhelming 'sound' is absolutely stunning!  To the end it is 'as new' although the closing 'Round And Around' piece does have some light static and a couple of static clicks.

'A New Machine Part 1' has only a minimal amount of light static and again plays so much better than many versions I have heard.  An Ex+ grading is a fair assessment I believe.

'Terminal Frost' plays with astounding depth from the word go and 'that' middle section is truly breathtaking.  Another 'turn up loud' moment that blasts through the speakers with immense power and no distortion.  The audio is 'as new' apart from some light clicks on the fade out.

'A New Machine Part 2' plays with great clarity and only a handful of soft ticks.

The atmospheric guitar intro on 'Sorrow' is Mint and the track continues to play with imperious quality.  There is no interference and the definition of the audio cannot be faulted.  The music is so deep and powerful and the closing solo is just stunning!  A superb finale with a perfect fade out also.

In summary this album plays with great clarity and depth for the vast majority but with a little interference on S2 albeit relatively short in duration.  The actual 'tracks' on S2 play with stunning quality and it's only a couple of fade outs including 'Round And Around' that has said interference.  S1 is in fantastic condition with immaculate audio!  It is worth noting the gatefold and lyric inner are in beautiful condition and appear barely touched.

The Gatefold

This is one of the strongest and cleanest covers I have seen and there is hardly any shelf wear.  The top edges are in perfect condition and the bottom edges have just one tiny rub mark.  The wide spine is also pristine with not even any corner wear.  The top right corners have no wear either and bottom right only a little.  The opening edge has no handling wear at all.  The front cover is beautifully clean and the back is the same with only a couple of small faint scratch lines.  The inside of the gatefold is in fantastic shape with no marking.  Another point of note is that it remains very strong and robust as if it hasn't been handled that much.  Overall this is a stunning example and it would be difficult to find better.

The Lyric Inner

This is in perfect condition with no edge or corner wear.

The Labels

They only have a couple of mega faint spindle traces on each side and no marking or writing.  Stunning!
