Label/Format: Blue Horizon – original matt blue format. The inner large circle ridge to the hole rim is textured.

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light+ and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: 7- 63200.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 121 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Scarce: available in both mono and stereo, the mono is much harder to find in fine visual and playing conditions due to the type of record players they were usually played on. This copy has a small few light surface marks but none at all sound and this plays beautifully with nothing unwanted. Early mono copies of this blues classic are hard to find like this.

Brief Info: The self-titled debut album from the legendary blues-era Fleetwood Mac from 1968. With the equally famous dog and dustbin cover artwork, this vintage album sounds nothing like the commercial AOR band that sold millions of albums in the latter 70s and beyond. Fronted by Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer, vocals are shared by both. This was real British blues and on one of the most famous labels of the genre. It proved successful too peaking at No 4 in the UK charts even though it had no singles included. A beautiful very early pressed mono copy and it plays with fantastic clean, focused sound. This is a gem for any blues fan and collector.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+. This is a single format with the front laminated, this wraps around the toop and bottom edges into the inside and not on to the back. The spine is not laminated, hence vulnerable and fragile. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd and includes the ‘Patent Pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: A really lovely looking front that retains very high freshness. The only blemishes are creases of which there are very few. A couple on the right side and a minor one near the left corner, others are just very small hairline types on the sides that few covers ever avoid totally. All have very modest visibility and impair this lovely front little. The famous dog and dustbin artwork looks fantastic through ultra clear and shiny laminate is that is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. Even under angled light there is barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling and also hardly a surface mark to be seen, including fine hairlines. Ultra smooth with a supreme gloss finish, this looks little handled and will not prove easy to find much better looking than this.

Cover Back: Very wear-prone indeed being matt black finished and what a true delight to see this devoid of ringwear and the overall lack of rubbing and fingermarks is pretty incredible. This looks as clean and fresh as the front and blemishes are very few. A couple of fine surface creases near the left edge is about it really and this side should grade Mint(-) on its own. As fresh and clean as when made, it looks simply wonderful and it will take something extraordinary to better this side.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with minimal traces of any wear and no feathering. Very slightly thickened in places if viewed end-on, but this is being somewhat critical. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The spine has no laminate protection but still in superb condition. Solid, quite straight, uncompressed and square, a fairly thin spine but the text is perfectly centred and all is present and unworn. This really is exceptional and few will be found like this.

Corners: A tiny tip rub bottom right front, little else and all retain superb shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this famous late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better and that is no understatement. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Even grading this EX(-) to EX hardly begins to describe the beauty of this superb record. It has a few surface marks, faint and mild paper scuffs, but these have NO sound whatsoever. How many records this great age will survive with no marks at all, especially mono examples? It has received a modest few plays only and sounds magnificent and that is a promise and guarantee. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. We all know the state so many vintage mono records are seen and heard in, this one has never been subjected to a mono record player since new and the owner has a very impressive high-end hi-fi system. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark blues record that introduced the world to the legendary band plays above its visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. My first listen to a mono copy of this for some considerable time, but well worthy of the wait. Excellent production and rich mono punch makes for the most pleasurable experience, few offered copies will get near this and for clean, pure, focused sound, this is near unbeatable. Any surface sounds are miniscule and most all plays silent, no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, but as you would expect from Blue Horizon. The light visual blemishes are ignored for outstanding quality sound that few mono copies will even match, let alone outperform I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no left or right mono noise, I am certain this record has been played very lightly. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended to all blues and non-blues fans alike. If sound is a higher priority than pristine looks, this copy delivers.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
