PETER GABRIEL AT THE ROXY 2 LPs ROBERT FRIPP STEVE HUNTER LARRY FAST

4/9/77

Review by Ted Mills

One of the earliest Peter Gabriel bootlegs, this concert recording from the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles has come out under several titles: Live USA, Live at the Roxy (obviously), and Slowburn. Probably from a FM radio broadcast,  Gabriel and his band, including Robert Fripp, were out touring with his first album and premiering tracks from his second, which is where a lot of the interest lies. "A Song Without Words," as it's listed is an early version of "Indigo" with different (worse) lyrics and a ill-advised doubling of the vocals with a Mickey Mouse effect. Yikes. What "Indigo" and "Waiting for the Big One" demonstrates here, more than on the studio recordings, is the debt Gabriel was paying to Ray Charles. "On the Air" is here in a slightly different arrangement, with a galloping rhythm replaced on the second album by a steady rock pulse. There are covers, too: "All Day and All of the Night," a scorching "Ain't That Peculiar," and "Back in NYC," by some group called Genesis. The band brings the rock back to the art school, and the drunken L.A. audience bellows its approval
