Record Collector Review:
It’s a rare pleasure to listen to an album on a ’67 Hacker, rather than the customary ’02 Matsui. This set comprises eight attractively-packaged 7” singles, all near-faithful reproductions of sought-after 45s from 1969-70, when Britain’s hordes of crop-headed young, mainly white, fans booted the new reggae sound into the public consciousness.Producers such as London-based ‘Sir’ Clancy Collins and Joe Mansano became cult heroes. And they still are, among collectors. Collins’ Black Panther commands over £200 on the rare occasions when an original Duke copy turns up, with Joe’s Allstars’ Skinhead Revolt (actually led by trombonist Rico Rodriguez blowing the 50s Doc Bagby R&B hit, Dumplins) not far behind. Both tunes have the jumping, pumping energy which the exuberant skin’eads loved. They were early appreciators of the genius of Lee Perry, whose vivid productions on his session band The Upsetters, such as Haunted House and Bronco, feature here. Some UK producers aimed their music specifically at the skin audience, but not always successfully. Claudette’s Skinheads A Bash Them is musically uninspired, despite its legendary status amongst reggae fans. But this set will delight many a former skin and offers great value to collectors.
