(Two records total in this auction)

2): SCARLET LETTER – MARY MAIDEN (MAINSTREAM 696) (DOUBLE SIDED PROMO) (VG++) (1969)
RECORD # 1: PARAPHERNALIA (MISPRINT) This was a Michigan band who had no connection with a group with the exact same name from Lowell, Massachusetts. Sunny Days is a phenomenal U.K. influenced piece of psychedelia heavy on keyboards, excellent guitar leads and seriously phased vocals, sounding like it could have been recorded in any London studio circa 68/69. Although the flip-side of the stock single is Sea of No Return, copies with this song seem to be much harder to come by than the double sided promo. This particular single gained much of its notoriety from a misprint in the Mainstream Records pressing plant. Another Michigan Band, The Scarlet Letter, had a song called Mary Maiden that erroneously had its label pasted on an unknown quantity of the Paraphernalia 45’s. So for many years, this led to quite a bit of confusion. To add to the confusion, Sea of No Return was penned by Ron Koss, who was a member of The Scarlet Letter. It’s not known whether Koss was actually a member of Paraphernalia or just wrote the song, but the fact that both bands were from Michigan on Mainstream and one of its sub labels (Time Records 501) makes this very plausible. Sunny Days was written by Greg Praeg.
RECORD # 2: THE SCARLET LETTER This Michigan band recorded two singles in 1968 and then went on to form Savage Grace. So, the “real” Mary Maiden (this one) is more of a straight-ahead rocker with some notable wah-wah guitar and piano. Their first 45 (recorded a few months earlier) was much more lightweight in sound. the band featured Ron Koss on vocals and guitar and John Seanor on keyboards.
Both of these records are graded VG++ and play great. They are being provided together in one auction because of the complicated story associated with this pressing and may help sort out the confusion from previous Youtube audio mis-postings. Check out the scans and audio samples.

Hi folks, this is Velvetfogg, founder of the U-SPACES music collective which ran from 1997 to 2020 on Yahoogroups and has now switched over to Facebook. The primary focus of U-SPACES was to provide a network of Psych & Garage music aficionados to build and share compilations of non comped songs. Over the past 40 years I have amassed a large 45 & LP collection which I am now choosing to put up for auction to help fund my kid’s college educations. Generally speaking, I am only putting things up for auction that are either in excellent condition or extremely rare.
My preference is to run these auctions on EBAY because of familiarity with the process, but there is the potential that I will switch or use other platforms in parallel in the future. Check out my collection on DISCOGS under VELVETFOGG. I have only listed 45’s on that site that I plan to auction in 2021/22 and the list will grow substantially on a weekly basis as I continue to go through my collection. I hope to list 10 records per week for EBAY auctions on Sundays.
