LP Description:

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - "Safe As Milk" LP - VERY RARE 1967 ORIGINAL UK MONO FIRST PRESSING vinyl LP on Pye International records. On offer here, from my own collection, is a 1967 UK original heavy vinyl 1st pressing of the iconic Captain Beefheart debut LP 'Safe As Milk' - Mono issue - Pye International NPL 28110. Laminated (to front) G&L flipback sleeve. Blue Pye labels. A1 / B1 matrix numbers. This is an excellent original copy! The sleeve is excellent, straight and clean except for a very small amount of light storage wear. The rear is still white and clean with no writing or ringwear. The Blue Pye labels are clean with no writing, rips or marks other than a few spindle traces. The record itself is near excellent, except for some non-sounding light surface marks. The vinyl plays great, with a crystal clear powerful mono sound, only very feint touches of playback static are evident.

"I may be hungry, but I sure ain't weird," Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart, famously intones on this , the legendary 1967 debut album by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. Safe as Milk is a bold, tough-ass distillation of Delta blues stomp and '60s garage-punk swagger, fused with a radically polyrhythmic and tempo-shifting style that one might term "art rock". Listening to the delightfully playful, absurdist "Abba Zabba", it's easy to see why Lester Bangs called Beefheart "the only true dadaist in rock"; the song is a good indication of the intricate, rule-breaking music the Magic Band would continue to hone. But there are also formidable ballads (the psychedelic "Autumn's Child", the lachrymose "I'm Glad"), mid-tempo pop-soul tunes (the Otis Redding-ish "Call on Me"), and straight-ahead blues-rock workouts ("Plastic Factory"), all of which showcase the fretwork of a young Ry Cooder. Much has been made of Beefheart's multiple-octave vocal range; he sings menacingly on "Dropout Boogie" and allegedly broke a very expensive microphone on the eerie "Electricity". Truly this is one of Rock's 'greatest albums of all time'!

Safe as Milk is a real winner, a very accessible debut for a band whose later album, Trout Mask Replica, tends to confuse a lot of first time listeners. But this is before the days of Zappa, Antennae Jimmy Semens, and Zoot Horn Rollo and features a straighter, tighter Magic Band. Not to say it won’t blow you away. Apparently this one was John Lennon’s favourite album in 1967. The first track hooks any listener, and nobody can ignore that overpowering vocal. Kickass guitar lines and tight rhythm n’ blues. But a hint of psychedelia; just wait til they get to Trout Mask! Try this one first, it’s a masterpiece!

Exceptionally RARE 1967 UK ORIGINAL first pressing LP from the one and only Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band "Safe As Milk"(Pye NPL 28110) MONO. Just how often will you see this item!! Tracks include "Drop Out Boogie", "Electricity", "Yellow Brick Road", "Zig Zag Wanderer", "Autumn's Child" etc..etc.. Incredible groundbreaking music!! Both the vinyl and sleeve (complete with flipbacks etc) are in lovely condition for a 42 year old artefact! No serious record collection is complete without this truly iconic album! Don't miss it! Vinyl: VERY GOOD + Near EXCELLENT (Thick heavy vinyl retains it's gloss & lustre with only some light marks which do not affect the sound at all....On playback there is just the odd touch of surface static in a couple of places. Both sides play excellently. A lovely original 1967 UK  MONO first pressing of this legendary Cpt.Beefheart LP)

Sleeve: EXCELLENT (A lovely clean condition original flipback sleeve with full glossy lamination on the front and a matt finish on the rear. Only a few small light creases on the front mainly near the bottom edge. Sleeve Printed and Made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd.)

Records Are Graded In The Following Way:

MINT: The record displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deteriortion in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT: Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD: Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD: Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing

+ or - : Indicates slightly better (+) or slightly lesser (-) condition than main grade

Packing Procedures: All LPs are securely and well packed in top quality material to avoid any unnecessary damage during transit. When posted the records are removed from the cover, if possible, and placed in a PVC outer protective sleeve to prevent sleeve splits in the post. I use brand new mailers, either the envelope style with thick stiffeners to prevent any sleeve bends in transit, or the "cruciform" style that wrap around the LP. I aim to dispatch all items within 48 hours of receiving payment. It is recommended that you choose the insurance option for higher value items. As stated above I cannot be held responsible for any item(s) lost or damaged in the post that are not shipped via insured / registered mail. I always obtain a certificate proof of posting receipt for every item sent, which will complete our transaction.
