PALADIN were formed in 1970 by drummer Keith Webb and keyboard player Pete Soley. Having toured with the ROLLING STONES as backing musicians, they decided the time was right to unleash their own creativity. Ex "WORLD OF OZ" bassist Peter Beckett, GLASS MENAGERIE/GRISBY DYKE keyboard player Lou Stonebridge, and GRISBY DYKE guitarist Derek Foley were brought in to complete the line up.

Initially, the band's influences were jazz, Latin, soul, blues, afro-Cuban, the dual keyboards creating a unique sound. They list their early fans as including Jon ANDERSON (YES). After building a credible live reputation, the band signed for Gerry Bron's Bronze label, and recorded this, their first album "live" in the studio. The album sold poorly, failing to make much of an impression, and consequently is now very rare and highly collectable in its original vinyl format.

The diverse style of the album make it difficult to pinpoint influences, but there's a bit of MANFRED MANN'S CHAPTER THREE, KEEF HARTLEY BAND, TRAFFIC, URIAH HEEP and COLOSSEUM to be heard. PALADIN is an absolutely splendid and original album containing a fantastic ground breaking fusion of progressive rock, soul, blues, funk, afro-cuban and eastern influenced music!!
The band only released two albums before their lack of success led to frustration, and they disbanded in 1972. Lou Stonebridge found success with McGuinness Flint, while Pete Soley formed Snafu with Mickey Moody. Peter Beckett joined the band Player as vocalist, and Keith Webb found work as drummer with various outfits.

The Vinyl Is In Lovely Excellent Condition - Plays Superbly

(A beautiful gleaming vinyl with deep mirror shine and only a two non audible and superficial faint wispy paper mark hairlines can be seen on side one. Play tested today with great powerful sound quality. The disc plays superbly all the way through on both sides. Supremely sharp and clear loud sound, with only light sporadic audible crackle, no skips, no jumps, no sticking, no serious loud pops or clicks that are noticeable. The vinyl has an incredible stereo reproduction with excellent sound quality, only a few minor touches of audible dust static on playback. This 1971 UK Bronze-Island first pressing still retains its full gloss and sheen with beautiful surfaces, it has that 'just pressed' look and judging by the labels and lack of spindle marks it has been looked after and cared for extremely well. A great original UK 1st pressing of this rare LP. I doubt if you can find a significantly better condition original copy than this one!)

(Original first pressing Bronze labels are immaculate, unmarked and in absolutely pristine condition. The light cream base colour is rich, vibrant and unmarked and fully stretches into the unworn spindle hole. The brown typeface is perfectly legible, and a close inspection of the spindle hole reveals just two faint miniscule spider lines on side one, nothing on side two. This album has only been played very, very few times during its 40 years of existence. A pretty perfect set of labels)

Thick Grainy Textured Black Gatefold Sleeve With Silver Embossed Paladin Logo On The Front 

(The gatefold cover is very thick with rough textured material in black which would usually wear easily but this copy has been in very good hands. This is one of those sleeves that is almost impossible to find in a perfect condition, due entirely to the fact that this is a jet black, unlaminated and heavily textured sleeve. A total recipe for disaster, and whilst this sleeve is not mint, it certainly stands out as an exceptionally excellent copy. The front surface is very clean and has retained virtually all of the original colour. The black is so easily rubbed away and here we have just a faint small sticker residue mark near the top right corner and a couple of insignificant tiny light creases near the edges. There are no heavy creases, tears or rips. The silver 'PALADIN' on the front is immaculate and has no wear or rubbing whatsoever. The top and bottom seams do have some shelfwear rubbing, as is usual with this fragile sleeve, with some white showing through. The spine has one tiny scuff near the top and some mild rubbing near the top corner tip. The typeface is all perfectly legible and clear. The opening edge is still pretty sharp and very straight with only a little feathering. The rear of the sleeve is very clean with just a few small light creases near the edges. Opening the gatefold reveals a pair of inner panels with only a few light creases and very minor wear. The original 'Made In England' plain white inner sleeve is present and is in excellent condition with only very light wear. I am happy to grade this notoriously fragile sleeve at a solid Excellent condition. I believe it would be difficult to find a much better copy of this 40 years vintage sleeve)

On offer here, from my own collection, is an EXCELLENT condition original 1971 UK 1st PRESS of the great self-titled debut LP by the obscure early 70's British prog rock band PALADIN, issued on the UK original 1st PRESS BRONZE-ISLAND Records label.

Very rare 1971 UK original 1st PRESS vinyl LP in thick textured/grainy gatefold with SILVER EMBOSSED lettering.

PALADIN were a melodic hard progressive crew who made two collectible albums ("Paladin" & "Charge!")  and featured 2 keyboards(organ) + guitar with strong original tunes. Released in the Spring of 1971, "Paladin" was the debut album from this creative prog-rock band. Formed the previous year by Keith Webb and Pete Solley (both ex-members of Terry Reid's band), Paladin encompassed all that was experimental in early 70's rock.

Fusing the worlds of jazz, rock and ethnic Cuban music, Paladin's debut album is both powerful and rhythmic, in places echoing excursions by bands such as TRAFFIC, COLOSSEUM, MANFRED MANN's CHAPTER THREE, KEEF HARTLEY BAND, URIAH HEEP and GINGER BAKER's AIRFORCE.

Pete Solley's organ playing and Derek Foley's guitar work are excellent throughout, and the other guys contribute well in their own areas with Keith Webb's outstanding, powerful drumming keeping the rhythm section pumping along beautifully. Looking back PALADIN were at the forefront of prog-rock/jazz but never got the recognition that Colosseum, Keef Hartley, Deep Purple, Yes, etc achieved. Listen to this debut album carefully and you can spot bits of all those artists in there. Like such albums of that time there's even the obligatory drum solo on Dance of the Cobra, but it's not overlong or tedious. With varied progressive elements & influences, the primary source of their progressive sound was a complex nature with jazzy/prog structures via heavy organ work, like Colosseum, for example. But the influences are not only jazzy as they have as well, a mixture of african percussions with hard rock moves. Brilliant album.

This ORIGINAL 1971 UK BRONZE-ISLAND RECORDS 1ST PRESS album is a 'MUST HAVE' for fans and collectors of early 70s BRITISH PROG ROCK.

 The record is pressed on THICK quality EXCELLENT condition vinyl. The Cat.No. is ILPS 9150 on the ORIGINAL 1st PRESS BRONZE-ISLAND label (see picture) and is a 1971 UK Stereo 1st Pressing (there were NO Monos!)!!

I very much doubt if you can find a better condition original UK 1st PRESS of this EXCELLENT early 70's UK PROG ROCK LP!!

MINT (M): The record / cd displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deterioration in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT (EX): Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD (VG): Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD (G): Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing
