THE BEGINNINGS:

In 1959 Charlie Palmieri encountered Pacheco playing flute at the Monte Carlo Ballroom in New York and recruited him to his band. Johnny initially played timbales, but when trumpeter Mario Cora departed to live in Puerto Rico, Pacheco took over on flute. He appeared on the 1960 debut album, Let's Dance The Charanga!, by Palmieri's flute, strings, rhythm section and voices band, Charanga "La Duboney", on the United Artists Records label, which was reissued under the title Echoes Of An Era. The two musicians parted company in 1960. Most accounts have highlighted "musical differences", but Latin music historian Max Salazar gives another perspective: ". . . this red-hot charanga (flute and violin) band was in great demand as its name began to appear on posters for two and three dances on the same evening. (Palmieri and Pacheco booked the gigs in different parts of town.) The dancers let Charlie know that they felt robbed and the high price of tickets entitled them to his band for an entire evening. When Palmieri decided that he alone would book the band, Pacheco left to form his own charanga band . . ." (quote from article "Remembering Charlie Palmieri", 1989).

Pacheco debuted with his own band in 1960 on Pacheco Y Su Charanga Vol. I, which was the first album released on the Alegre label, founded by Al Santiago. The record was a bestseller and contained the smash hit "El Güiro De Macorina", which shot to the top of the Farándula New York chart in February 1961. Johnny and his charanga band issued a further four volumes on Alegre. His lead singers included Elliot Romero, Rudy Calzado and Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, who joined on volume four. Pacheco's was the most successful band during the charanga and pachanga craze from 1960-64. In 1961, Johnny played flute with the Alegre All-Stars on their first descarga (Latin jam session) album. " . . . I cut my own throat", said Al Santiago in a 1989 interview, "when the album came out and I named Charlie (Palmieri) as leader of the Alegre All-Stars - Pacheco from that point down didn't want to have anything to do with the Alegre All-Stars. That's why he was never on any other album except the first."

"Pacheco's first avatar was as a flutist, first with Charlie Palmieri's groundbreaking 1959 charanga, then — until he switched to conjunto in 1964 — with his own flute-and-fiddles group. Though the band followed Cuban models (far too closely, some Cuban musicians grumbled), his own style was very distinctive, tougher and less flowing than his Cuban rivals, and his wildly successful band benefited also from a very fine singers in ELLIOT ROMERO, PETE "EL CONDE" RODRIUGUEZ & VITIN LOPEZ (AllOf Them In This LP!

En 1963, Pacheco graba dos álbumes: el cuarto titulado PACHECO Y SU CHARANGA, VOL IV – SUAV’ITO, (Alegre LPA-8200), vocalizado por Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez, Vitín López y Elliot Romero, en el cual se incluyen los temas Recuerdos de Arcaño, Mi paloma, Batachanga y El chéchere, compuestos por Pacheco; Masacote, de Héctor Zeno/J.Pacheco/Álvarez; Cumbaye, de Silvio Contreras; Carnaval, de L. Velasco;  Cachetera, de Mike Ramos; Suavito, de Gil Suárez; Pa’ los pollos, de Enrique Jorrín; No me toques ese punto y Barrio, composiciones de Lou Pérez.

Y el quinto, y último álbum para ALEGRE, titulado SPOTLIGHT ON PACHECO – VOL V, (Alegre LPA-8270), vocalizado por el trío Rodríguez – López – Romero, que contenía los temas El Carabiné, Chuki-luki wobble y Los chiquitines, composiciones de Pacheco; Las matanceras son, de Hilda Rodríguez; A mí que, de Jesús Guerra;  y La muerte llegó, de M. Jorrín; Muchachita sencilla, de Enrique Bonne; Decidido, de Gil Suárez; Yo te voy a hacer caso; y el tema brasilero Desafinado, de N. Mendonca y Antonio Carlos Jobin.

Éste álbum terminaría siendo el último grabado con su charanga tradicional, ya que a partir del año siguiente, modificaría éste formato por el de un conjunto.

Don't assume that our vinyl determination of "Very Good+" is the same as yours!

RECORD OR COVER GRADED VG or LESS WILL BE "SOLD AS IS"

MINT: Unplayed, still sealed.
 

NM RECORDS: are shiny, with no visible defects, they might have one or 2 minor superficial scuff and they should play without any noise. Writing, stickers or other markings cannot appear on the label, nor can any “spindle marks” from someone trying to blindly put the record on the turntable. Major factory defects also must not be present; a record and label obviously pressed off center is not Near Mint. If played, it will do so with no surface noise. (NM records don’t have to be “never played”; a record used on an excellent turntable can remain NM after many plays if the disc is properly cared for.)

NM COVERS:

have no creases, ring wear or seam splits of any kind.

Picture Sleeves: should look as if they never housed a record. This is a great reason to remove your 45s from their picture sleeves and keep them separate. Just keeping the 45 inside the sleeve will cause damage than can reduce the grade of the sleeve.  

VG++ (Excellent) RECORDS: 
Barely noticeable play wear and background noise. May have surface scuffs and/or superficial marks, which will be inaudible or indiscernible from the background, no scratches. Very nice, flaws noted.
VG++ COVERS:
Artwork is still as close to perfect as can be. Some impression to the cover (minor outer ring wear) but no ink wear! Some slight creases to the corners, but not wrinkled and obtrusive to the eye. The corners can show white (where the artwork pasted slick was) meaning, slight wear. No seam splits or writing on the cover or taped repairs can make this grade.  

VG+ RECORDS:

may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. Minor signs of handling are OK, too, such as telltale marks around the center hole, but repeated playing has not misshapen the hole. There may be some very light ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable.

VG+ COVERS:
should have only minor wear. A VG+ cover might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the most vulnerable location. Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking. Covers with cut-out markings can never be considered Near Mint.

VG+ PICTURE SLEEVES:
might show some very light creasing where it is obvious that a record once resided (or still does reside). A VG+ picture sleeve might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom, the sleeve’s most vulnerable location. 

VG RECORDS:

They have more obvious flaws than their counterparts in better shape. They lack most of the original gloss found on factory-fresh records. Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches  may be audible, especially in soft passages and during a song’s intro and ending. But the noise will not overpower the music otherwise. Minor writing, tape, or a sticker can detract from the label. Many collectors who have jukeboxes   will use VG records in them and not think twice. They remain a fine listening experience, just not the same as if it were in better shape.

VG COVERS and PICTURE SLEEVES:
will have many signs of human handling. Ring wear  in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would  reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might be  visible. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it may appear on all three sides,  though it won’t be obvious upon looking. Someone might have written or stamped  a price tag on it, too.
