Directed by Elliot Silverstein, Cat Ballou is a classic Western comedy that famously subverted the tropes of the "Lone Ranger" era. It is best remembered for Lee Marvin’s dual role, which won him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

  • The Plot: Catherine "Cat" Ballou (Jane Fonda), an aspiring schoolteacher, turns into an outlaw to avenge her father’s murder by a ruthless land development company. She hires what she thinks is a legendary gunfighter, Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin), only to find he is a washed-up alcoholic who can barely stay on his horse.

  • The Musical Link: Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye appear as "The Sunrise Kid" and "Sam the Shade"—a pair of wandering minstrels who act as the film’s Greek chorus. They transition the scenes by singing "The Ballad of Cat Ballou," narrating the story as it unfolds.

  • The Legacy: It was one of the first major "Western Parodies," paving the way for films like Blazing Saddles. Sadly, this was Nat King Cole’s final film appearance; he passed away shortly before its release.

The Music: Nat King Cole Sings... (T-2340 Mono)

While the Stereo version (ST-2340) offers a wider soundstage, the Mono (T-2340) version is often preferred by purists who want to hear the music exactly as it was mixed for the 1965 theater speakers.

Why the Mono Version Matters:

  • The "Punch": Mono mixes from this era often have a "thicker" sound. Nat King Cole’s voice is centered and prominent, with the Nelson Riddle orchestra providing a dense, focused backing.

  • Historical Significance: This was Nat King Cole's final film and one of his last major album releases. He passed away from lung cancer in February 1965, just months before the film was released.

  • Soundtrack Authenticity: The "Greek Chorus" style of the music in the film was intended to be heard clearly over dialogue; the Mono mix ensures the vocal interplay between Cole and Kaye is never lost in the "space" of a stereo field.
