Open Sky Unit were a short-lived but visionary fusion collective born from Liege's tight-knit scene in the early 70s. Led by saxophonist Jacques Pelzer and his daughter Micheline, with Steve Houben, Janot Buchem, Michel Graillier and pianist Ron Wilson, the group brought the first stirs of communalism to Belgian jazz. Their self-titled 1974 opus, out on the Duchesne classical imprint, channelled the spirit of Dave Liebman's Open Sky into a fluid flurry of soul, funk and improv, recorded live at the Jazzland club where musicians ran the shop and inhibitions melted. Now revived by Sdban, this reissue includes a bonus 7" of Wilson's 'Sunshine Star', backed with 'Peace Is The Answer' from 1973 - a rare, tender precursor to the LP's freer groove.
