This is an original 1st pressing of the classic NICK DRAKE album. An extremely rare UK pressing, with great vinyl, top audio and great cover.
Bryter Layter, recorded in 1970, was the second of three albums by British folk musician Nick Drake. Like Five Leaves Left, the album contains no unaccompanied songs: Drake was accompanied by part of the British folk rock group Fairport Convention and John Cale from The Velvet Underground, as well as Beach Boys musicians Mike Kowalski and Ed Carter.
In 2000, Q placed Bryter Layter at number 23 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. Included in Q's "5 Best Re-Issues of 2000".
In 2003, the album was ranked number 242 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and is considered a land mark record of the period.
ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:
Bryter Layter is a highly complex, delicate collection of music, and is also a very sensitive vinyl extremely hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'Hazey Jane.'
I'm delighted to say that this original pressing has bright clear audio. Super sound and minimal background static that can be found on any vinyl. There is certainly no dominant interference, and no loud pops, clicks or distortion. It really sounds amazing and plays with great sound separation and clarity!
Superb sound, every track has been tested and I could find no obvious sound blemishes. Wonderful TOP audio, there is NO distortion, and obviously NO sticks or jumps what so ever.
I will give a detailed account below:
Bryter Layter
opens with the orchestral and quiet 'Introduction'. Here the opening bars are just crystal clear. Some very fiaint very distance touch of occasional static but it is incredibly light, with just a couple of light tics. Building up with 'Hazey Jane II' this great track starts the record with great audio. Again some very faint and very occaiosnal surface sound only.'At The Chime Of A City Clock,' such a hard track for
Bryter Layter
, nearly always prone to heavy wear, here sounds great. No pops or clicks during the music. One or two occasional ultra light static tics and some fairly consistent static. 'One Of These Things First' also sounds great but again with some fairly consistent static. This is another quiet track always prone to heavy static and loud pops and clicks. Another delicate Nick Drake classic, 'Hazey Jane I,' rounds off side 1. with great audio. A bit of faint background static only, no pops or clicks and great clear sound. There is some light occasional static but for such quiet paired down music it is minimal. Superb sound from this original pressing.Side 2. of Bryter Layter virtually always starts of with heavy static. There are a couple of minutes of very quiet music, and there is nearly always a lot of surface noise. Here there is some light background static but it is light apart from the first fifteen seconds, which plays with heavy static. After this the track 'Bryter Layter' plays without a single pop or click throughout. Here the sound is deep and powerful, and sharp vinyl sound! The long quiet 'Fly' plays with static thgpiutout the track, but it it still sounds great, with no pops tics or clicks. The long quiet intro to 'Poor Boy,' one of the quietest parts on the record, plays the same as the previous track. Some fairly consistent light static throughout, it plays with no distortion, no loud pops, no loud tics and not a hint of distortion anywhere on this great record. The long jazz piano solo plays just superbly.
'Northern Sky' has great clear sound from half way through and there is not a hint of distortion. Thie first half of the track does play with consistent light static throughout. Side 2. ends with a superbly clear 'Sunday.' The long intro of this quiet track is virtually always plague by unwanted noise. Here it sounds great, with no loud pops or clicks, some background static only.
This is a very collectable example of this greata record and althgoth there is quite a bit of static in places its an enjoyable listen. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals which come through with tremendous power. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars and orchestration come through crisp and clear. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.
For such a quiet album its hard to ever find pieces that are worth listening to, and its obvious to say that no Bryter Layter vinyl will ever play with total silence.
Great first press mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact. A great all round example of this great vinyl.
This is a great audio pleasure and I would have to give the audio a grading of EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT PLUS.
THE RECORD
What are the chances of being able to purchase a 1st pressing of this great album that is barely played. This is a superb piece of glossy vinyl. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original pressings, the record has great shine, with NO scratches and NO hairlines. Inspected under a spot light, there are barely any paper removal marks, a couple of ultra light whispy lines only. This is a stunning example of this incredibly rare vinyl.
Grades at
EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT.
VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:
Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.
THE LABELS
Superb 1st press labels, with barely a single spindle trace in sight, perhaps one on side 1. but its so faint its barely visible. Guaranteed! NO wear around the spindle hole! Amazing examples of this rare classic press.
Absolutely beautiful, it would be hard to ever find better!
Graded at NEAR MINT.
THE COVER
The cover is made from a single sheet of wrap-around cardboard with the seam across the inner top and bottom edge of the cover. A very 1st press example this cover comes with a textured finish. A great example with the only slight handling wear.
A great example, very little ring wear, minimal corner wear and minimal handling marks.
Graded at EXCELLENT.
THE INNER
Original pale blue island inner sleeve with large thumb notch across the top and external flip backs, even these inners are extremely rare. Very prone to wear this is a great example with no splits and just one tiny 4mm tear at the top and doe light creasing and some minor age yellowing.
Graded at EXCELLENT.
RARITY
An original 1st pressing of Bryter Layter in any condition is extreely rare. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound, and it was produced in tiny quantities. It's an album that is incredibly prone to loss of sound. Any original examples with a record in great condition is an ultimate rarity, and getting rarer by the day. Finding a complete original press in great condition makes this a very rare opportunity for a serious vinyl collector.

SCRUPULOUS EXAMINATION and TESTING:
All our records are play tested on highly sensitive equipment to ensure the sound quality and accuracy of description. We aim to give a precise and concise description of the sound, pointing out the slightest defect so that you know exactly what you are buying. We aim to describe all records as accurately as possible, and offer a full refund on return if for any reason you are not completely happy with the item description.
+
VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:
Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
