I've been a radio programmer at WKCR-FM 89.9 New York for 40+ years. I have been ‘gathering’ records since i was 7 years old. I have never sold records before. I have a kid going to college and tuition is absurd.
I have several copies of Kind of Blue (have only played this record once to listen to sound quality). I have custom tube reference systems (4 separate stereos) at home. This pressing will beat any copy of Kind of Blue you've ever played.
This record’s sound will make you want to take all of your remastered pressings (MoFi especially) and dump them off at the Goodwill.
There have been many differently mastered versions cut over the years, but this pressing without doubt is where it all came together: the studio space, the recording gear, the engineers, the band, and Miles approach to letting the musicians just ‘go’. This is the best pressing of maybe the most important recording of all time.
This vintage analog Columbia pressing has a sound that modern recordings simply don’t: rich, full-bodied bass, the correct amount of weight down low, natural tonality in the midrange, all the instruments have the correct timbre, transparency, and resolution.
You will hear INTO the recording, and be able to ‘see' the performance as if you are sitting in the studio with the band.
The CBS 30th Street Studio was considered by many in the music industry to be the best sounding room in its time and others consider it to have been the greatest recording studio in history.
This is a phenomenal copy, of an extremely rare record.
Vinyl is gorgeous, still glossy showing no surface scuffs or scratches. Side A has occasional surface noise (quality: 8.5/10). The level of noise I would rate 2/10, it is very soft. Side B surface quality: 8/10.
Grading the cover conservatively at VG+ because of some very minor discoloration, but certainly not the wear one would expect for a 1959 release.
