Description
Mountainman: s/t LP (US, Camelia, 1971). Very rare NorCal loner protest folk-psych-garage, by one Ross Arthur Wilson, on a Sacramento custom label known for early rock 'n' roll and rockabilly sides by the Nervous Kats and the Mystery Trio, etc, dating back to the late 1950s. Recorded by Charles Brandt at Brandt Recording Studios in Sacramento in late '70 or early '71, the richly colored red labels are marked for promotion only, which probably means the artist was given these records to sell at gigs at the time. Great liner notes by a female friend are dated April 1971 (she says Ross is 23 at that time), there is a very authentic look and sound to the whole artifact on many levels - call it gravitas, or a token of a lost world. One of the rarest Sacramento psych releases! While uneven, this is very enjoyable, about as "Real" a document as one could hope for from the Vietnam era, a troubled, world weary, alienated troubadour, with a raw sounding drummer and bass player backing him, giving it a more garage feel with some nice abrupt drum fills, his voice reaching to the people for sustenance and communion of emotion (and maybe a few dollars to get to his next gig). Compares favorably to say, the Merry Airbrakes LP that Shadoks reissued. This kicks off with a bizarre poetry intro done as dramatic reading, leading into a rough and ready "Proud Mary" - this is earnest. Next is a lively version of "Sound Of Silence" with some wah-wah guitar effects, plus interesting, rough versions of "With A Little Help From My Friends", "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die", "Lay Lady Lay" (with tabla), a unique arrangement of "Elenor Rigby" (sic), plus a couple originals like the mining tale, "Dark As A Dungeon" and "Leave Them A Flower" (which references the '69 Santa Barbara oil spill). Great period piece! Like a cover tune Ed Askew or something.
Thick gatefold cover grades EX with sone yellowing and brown spots. The vinyl is very clean EX to M-. Very RARE!!!
