When Muddy Waters deemed a harp player talented enough to follow Little Walter and James Cotton (and Shakey Horton and Junior Wells -- op.ed.)  into his peerless combo, he must have been someone special. Mojo Buford spent several stints in the employ of the Chicago blues legend, and was his harpist of choice in the final edition of the Waters band.

George Buford left Mississippi for Memphis while still young, learning his early blues lessons there. He relocated to Chicago in 1952, eventually forming a band called the Savage Boys that mutated into the Muddy Waters, Jr. Band (no, they weren't fronted by a Waters imitator; they subbed for their mighty sponsor at local clubs when he was on the road). Buford played with Muddy Waters as early as 1959, but a 1962 uprooting to Minneapolis to front his own combo, and cut a couple of solid but extremely obscure LPs for Vernon and Folk-Art, removed him from the Windy City scene for a while. Buford returned to Waters' combo in 1967 for a year, put in a longer stint with him during the early '70s, and came back for the last time after Jerry Portnoy exited with the rest of his mates to form the Legendary Blues Band. Buford recorded as a bandleader for Mr. Blues (later reissued on Rooster Blues) and the British JSP logo, never drifting far from his enduring Chicago blues roots.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          THE VINYL IS IN DECENT, VERY GOOD (VG) CONDITION (NEAR MINT COPIES OF THIS ALBUM ARE FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES UNKNOWN; WE DO NOT BELIEVE ONE WAS SPOTTED SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE RECORD-COLLECTING).

(b)          CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in clean, playable condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches  (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters) and a few others that might cause short periods of pops and clicks, specially during the low, quiet passages.  The disc plays with very light and minor, tolerable, surface noise BUT WITHOUT ANY DISTORTION WHATSOEVER! 

(c)             Important!:  WE CAUTION THAT a bad groove causes the record to 'stick' (repeat the same groove all over again) on one spot on side 1 (closing seconds of track 4: 'Come Back Baby'); and "skips" once on "Knockin' on my door" ( we reckon that about 2-3 seconds of the music is lost). The two bad grooves are isolated accidents and do not repeat elsewhere on the record,  BUT the buyer will have to manually reposition the tonearm on the "sticky" spot in order to allow the record to continue playing the next track. This might be possible to correct by using different stylus tracking force and calibration.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Stereo copies of this album do not exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++). [the laminated front side is in a much better shape than the back panel]

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some  ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 5 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering ON THE BACK PAPER SLICK (please note: this affects ONLY the paper slick, NOT the cardboard base)

-         Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity  (nothing significant) (less than 4 square inches in size, total).

-         Cover has a minor cut (tear) on the back cover's paper slick, along the opening side (not affecting the cardboard base, only the slick) ; about 1 inch in length

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing (except for Larry Parker's autograph, of course)

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
