The second volume in the three-volume series of unreleased demos & rarities by the genius of CAPTAIN TRIPS & THE MAGIC BAND.... Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band set the rock-scene on its ear from 1965 until 1982, when leader Don Van Vliet retired from music. Captain Beefheart engineered a mutant strain of musical DNA -- tuff-ass garage punk R&B, extraterrestrial field hollers, austere "classical" miniatures, loping sea chants, scorched-earth delta blues, free-blowing skronk, fat-bottom groove, and post-everything clang all found their way into the soup. Captain Beefheart And The Maigic Band are now regarded as one of the most original and consistently compelling bands ever waxed. Your opinion of this album depends on what you are expecting. 1969's Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart is one of rock's most complex albums; you have to live with it for months before absorbing its complex and dissonant layers.

These session demos give sketches of the tracks on Trout Mask Replica: a 1969 album the band spent a year working hard on, confined to a house in the woods, learning each part note for note and recording. If you didn't know, there is scant improvisation here.

During the work, one band member left the house once weekly for food-today with internet orders it would be total isolation. Drummer John French described the sessions as "Manson-like." Quite possibly. But it did lead to what is still rock's most complex avant-guard monolith.

If you never heard Trout Mask Replica, get that first and listen. If you grow to love it, look through the window of this album: you'll hear more of the parts more clearly and get a much greater appreciation of how complex and inventive this music is. -------------------------------------------------------------------- These four sides of audiophile vinyl packaged in elaborate color gatefold sleeves are surely among the most beautifully designed Captain Beefheart objects in existence. The set features a 24-page booklet and poster, unpublished photos, and extensive liner notes. The collection takes demo tracks from the legendary Trout Mask Replica album, when Captain Don Van Vliet put the band up to the extraordinary task of learning to play the sounds inside his head. While holed up in a California villa, the group developed the extraordinary instrumental vocabulary that makes Trout Mask Replica one of the most noteworthy albums in the history of rock, and here that process is documented with alternate versions, outtakes, and general disciplinary studies under the direction of the mad captain. The ideas were no less unhinged prior to the studio sessions that made the extraordinary album, making this album an essential compendium to the legendary album. With repeated listens, these demos shed a little light on the mystery of one of the most fascinating and bizarre recordings of the '60s, and these rehearsal tapes are equally as compelling as the end results.
