Label Conditions: Both practically as-made with any blemishes minuscule. This a once-played record by myself just to check the pressing and audio quality – which is totally fantastic throughout.

Rarity: Deram originals are ultra rare and beyond. Selling in minuscule numbers and largely going unnoticed. If an excellent to near mint copy ever surfaces these days, expect to pay in the region of £2,000++ for it. So no qualms in offering this limited edition Tapestry repressing which is fantastic. According to the cover, this is a limited edition of only 1,000 copies.

Musicians: Clodagh Simonds – lead vocals, backing vocals, piano, harpsichord, mellotron; Alison Williams – lead vocals, backing vocals; David Williams – guitar, backing vocals; Frank Boylan – bass guitar, backing vocals; William Murray - drums, percussion.

Brief Info: Mellow Candle were from Dublin in Ireland, they made this one-off album on Deram in 1972 and it came and went practically unnoticed. Probably signed as a loss-leader with next to no promotion or airplay at all – it was pretty much doomed from day of issue. In the history of music, has there been more injustice? ‘Swaddling Songs’ is an absolute classic and joy. The band include two highly gifted female vocalist in Clodagh Simonds and Alison Williams, their complex vocal interplay and arrangements is absolutely stunning. The band played a progressive folk-rock with elements of psychedelic rock and this album has reached almost legendary status and is one of the most sort-after albums by (rich) collectors. Clearly a hugely talented band, but unfairly doomed to obscurity. Such as it’s rarity on the original Deram label, it has gone out-or-reach for most collectors these days, these surface so rarely, and often when they do, they are in very poor conditions (but still command very high prices). So never any qualms in offering a top-quality repressing, this one on Tapestry and it appears made in Liechtenstein and not mass-produced. These heavyweight repressings from varying companies tend to be variable, and many often disappointing. But have NO fears with this one, it sounds absolutely fantastic with beautiful clear sound and NO pressing issues. This copy played just once by myself and the cover still has it’s shrinkwrap, only neatly opened to carefully remove the record. Thus I cannot open the gatefold cover to show the inside, but this copy is practically as new. For vinyl and analogue sound purists, this is probably the only way to experience this ‘lost’ masterpiece, and this does it fantastic justice. Indeed these have become quite elusive in their own right and that will continue to be the case as time passes.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT: still in shrinkwrap, only neatly opened on the right opening edge. Even the manufacturer’s shrinkwrap is immaculate, fresh, clear and barely crinkled at all. This has provided superb protection for this delicate black and white cover, this will prove near impossible to find better. A gatefold unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in Liechtenstein to the highest possible standard. The cover states ‘Limited Edition 1000 Copies’. Very importantly, the original artwork is retained.

The Inner Sleeve: The basic white unlined inner sleeve is also Mint as made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading/Sound: The record is exactly as made, I simply removed it from the cover and played it once to check the quality. Not all repressings of rare albums are of this splendid quality, but this is a beauty and offers the finest sound possible. Any visual blemishes are simply as they left the factory, and nothing sounds. In terms of production, this is a masterclass with gorgeous separation and mix of the complex music and vocals. I cannot recommend this album and copy highly enough. This has to be contender for one of the greatest ‘lost’ classics ever made, and Tapestry have done a superb job in doing it perfect justice.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
