Maurice Deebank is best known for his work as guitarist and co-songwriter for UK Indie band ‘Felt’ from the early eighties. But this, his first and only solo record is a testament to not only his high quality guitar work but to his creativity as an artist.
‘Inner Thought Zone’ is an entirely instrumental record featuring a nicely reverberated clean tone electric guitar and a sweet sounding acoustic guitar that entwine to create some really interesting and soulful progressions and melodies.
A lush and sparse eighties production reminiscent of label mate Ben Watt with its minimal, spacious, synthesizer backing and watery guitar tones backed up by a very simple plodding electric bass and the occasional bit of light percussion to give it some stability in tracks like the Neo-Samba-esque ‘Study No.1'’.
The real highlight on this record for me at least, is the opening track on the second side. ‘Silver Fountain of Paradise Square’ shows a real depth and scope to the possibilities of a solo guitar. A graceful melody swings on the edge of Deebanks lilting arpeggios that captures the imagination is soothing to the ear.
Records like this always excite my curiosity at how an artist comes to make this music. Sprawling and minimal. Part improvised, part layered and composed. free and yet cleverly controlled. Its like if Talk Talk and Robert Fripp had a late night jam and the drummer went home early.
