The Harratin are the largest ethnic group in Mauretania. They also spread into neighboring countries.
The call themselves Issigaren ('the red ones'). They are descendants of sub-saharan black slaves.
Mauretania was the last country to abolish slavery, in 1980 ! Most Harratin speak imoshag (the Touareg language),
but some speak a regional Arabic or Berber language. They have a strong affinity to the Sufi sect of the Gnawa.
These recordings of the Harratin were in fact made in Tamanrasset, Algeria, during the famous Lhote Expedition of 1948.

Moulay Idriss was the founder of the Kindom of Morocco (8th century), who fled to Mecca when his family was killed
by the Abassides, but he got poisened upon his return to Meknes by Harun al-Rachid, which left his pregnant wife Kenza behind.

We spot check every record on semi-professional equipment with a 3.0 mil spherical
needle, using no noise reduction for grading.
Grading scale for 78s according to VJM standards: N- E+ E E- VG+ VG VG- G+

No packing charges. We sandwich your discs between several squares of stiff corrugated
cardboard, then use bubble wrap around and pack inside a sturdy record mailing box with
more padding material for safe transport.
