What else needs to be said about this, probably the most beloved and venerated of all albums - Soul or otherwise - that hasn’t been said before?  Marvin’s tortured and pained soul exploded in this album like it never did before - or again. Considered to be the # 1 soul album of all times, and probably one of the top-10 most important albums IN ANY GENRE - this masterpiece (and, yes, masterpiece is the right word here), quietly gained in stature over the ensuing three decades to become a proverbial monument of modern music. This is simply a work of art, in the same sense we use this term to denote works of masters of Renaissance or Classicism. If you have never heard it, you must have been (a) stranded on a desert island (b) incarcerated by the oppressive regime or (c) hearing -challenged. Whatever the case, you owe yourself a favor of hearing it, in all its analogue, vinyl glory. The intricacy of the arrangement, the supreme confidence (but no exibitionism!) of the musicians, specially the breath-taking rhythm section, which provides ‘backbone’ for Marvin’s cascading melismas and hollers, is more than heart can withstand. When he sings "Save the Children", you get to feel every word, and every syllable. And, this is just a beginning. By the time the record stops spinning, you will be a changed person. (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some visible ring wear; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (bubble in paper slick) in the back panel (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No split seams

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No writing

-         No stamps

-         No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-         No peel-off marks

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
