Because of the renown achieved in later years by Fred Neil, it is easy to forget that his partner was much better known at the time Martin & Neil released their sole album in 1964. "Vince Martin With the Tarriers," as they were billed, had scored a Top Ten hit with "Cindy, Oh Cindy" in 1956. Martin possessed the sort of forceful tenor that enabled Glenn Yarbrough to lead the Limeliters to success, and he used it in a similarly dramatic way. It also provided a striking contrast to Neil's bass-baritone. Martin & Neil came along at a time when commercial folk was showing a distinct social consciousness, and their style drew heavily on that of the massively popular Peter, Paul & Mary, particularly on the Neil-composed title song, with its stirring utopian tone ("one world in harmony"), and even Martin's "Red Balloon," a children's song in the tradition of "Puff the Magic Dragon" with some lyrics that later turned up in Jefferson Airplane's "Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil." Accompanied by Felix Pappalardi on the bass-like guitarron and John Sebastian on harmonica, the duo strummed 12-string acoustic guitars and used their strikingly different voices to reinvent traditional songs like "I Know You Rider" and "Lonesome Valley," popular covers like Bonnie Dobson's "Morning Dew," and some originals. Neil's "Wild Child in a World of Trouble," which he sang alone, looked forward to his career as a solo singer/songwriter, which commenced not long after this album was released.

All we can say is this: if you have never heard this album, you don't know what you are missing. We have a theory that this is the first truly psychedelic album ever - an album which preceded earliest known specimens of the psychedelic species by nearly two years. This is a gentle, delicate, literate, intricate, moody folk with a twist. Truly one of a kind - nothing comes even close.

This album is insanely rare in almost any condition. We are proud to present here an impossible ORIGINAL STEREO PRESSING.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):  [COVER DAMAGE NOTED]

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD- / very good minus /  (VG-).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A visible and obtrusive water stain affects about 50% of the cover's surface: 60% of the front side, 40% of the back.; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact and whole (no part of the slick is missing), however, the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover , separation of slick from the cardboard base,  visible brownish discoloration and a slight wavy (curly) warp in the affected area.

-        Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in red ballpoint pen, about 1/4 x 2 inches in size); a few tracks underlined with red and blue ballpoint pen or highlighted in pink marker; some of the marker has bled color to the surrounding area (nothing significant)

-        The previous owner delicately taped the bottom seam with a lengthwise piece of transparent scotch tape DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE SEAM IS NOT SPLIT (it was  apparently  taped as a purely precautionary measure).

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some small peeling-off along the top seam, away from the brown stain (this affects only the paper slick, not the cardboard base)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps  (except for the promo stamp)

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
