Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive and retain a genuine freshness that’s so unusual on this album. This being her most popular 60s title, and so often played into submission. These lovely labels have only very light and few spindle marks, side two incredibly light indeed. This beautiful record looks hardly played which is reitterated by superb, pristine sound.

Cat Number: LK 4689.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Scarce and rarely seen in such lovely visual and playing condition. Most heavily played on vintage mono equipment that inflicted marks and groovewear.

Mother & Stamper Codes: 1 G / 1 G (the ‘G’s being slightly unclear, possibly B).

Brief Info: Marianne’s second UK Decca album and it proved to be her most popular. When she returned in the latter part of the 1970s a very different sounding lady appeared with far more radical material, content and a totally different voice. This is my personal favourite from here early catalogue, the second of four issued on Decca and it sold fairly well. Another lovely record from the gentle pop-folk of the early Faithfull sound. This is a superb example too and again from the lovely collection of barely played records. The ultra flimsy cover has also withstood the test-of-time well with only some mildish toning around the edges of the back. The record itself plays to perfection and never take this for granted. The vast majority of these I have seen have been heavily played with covered with marks and sometimes deep scratches. For fans needing this rare record, it will prove difficult to find substantially better.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+. A single format, the front laminated with Clarifoil, this wraps around the closed edges but only on to the back via the spine. The top and bottom edges end into the inside flaps. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker Ltd.

Lamination & Front: One of the female faces of the swinging 60s and rarely will it be seen much better. The laminate has a lovely semi-gloss sheen and retains very fine clarity with barely any friction rubs or dulling. Unusually on these early flimsy Decca covers, this is fully adhered with no lifting or blistering. A few light surface marks and creases, but not many and only one can be considered even moderate. A very faint trace of a record impression dull when viewed under light, but few will show less. This vintage front will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Back: Unprotected and very vulnerable but again this has stood the test of time well. Some mildish toning around the perimeters and faint traces of set-off. No rubbing or penetrating ringwear and only slightly darkened with age. The lack or creasing again is noteworthy. A very mild trace of burring to the top panel end. The back graphics shows Marianne in the studio at various times during recording. Overall this back looks lovely and just right for its considerable age.

Top Edge: The back top panel is very slightly proud of the front, hence slight burring has occurred but only minor. Practically no wear to the main laminated edge.

Bottom Edge: Barely any wear at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Often these early thin card Decca covers suffer tears but not this one. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has the odd small hairline crack or toning trace.

Corners: Odd tiny tip crease or rub but all retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner: This vintage Polylined Decca inner has patchy age toning and some glue browning as can be seen on my picture, but that apart, it little else to fault and the window is very neat indeed. It is British patented but has foreign patents pending text and guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Critically graded EX++, it does have a few faint and totally insignificant surface marks, more like transit scuffs instead of hairlines and not a scratch to be seen. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy time has largely forgotten and this is probably its first trip out of the inner for many, many years. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A delicate album, but this outstanding mono record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Her vocals have a lovely crisp and natural sound and this is a polished sounding record. Barely any traces at all of surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, but as you would expect from Decca of course. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, always a delight to hear such an old record sounding so clean and truly magnificent. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better for looks and sound quality will be hard to even match – strong recommendation is mandatory – a beautiful timeless piece.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
