Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with just one or two ultra fine and faint spindle traces, and look hard to even see them.

Cat Number: UAG 29417.

Weight of this Record: 146 grams. Above average for this one.

Country of Manufacture: The labels state ‘Manufactured in Germany’, but this is open to question as the catalogue number is UK and it has the UK matrix numbers and etchings (seen further down). The cover and inner all appear UK too and, in my opinion, any collector can be assured this is a full UK pressing and copy. In fact, checking my archives, the last TWO of these had the small overprints on the labels. The labels have a rim overprint striking out the ‘Manufactured in England’ and I am convinced this label overprint and new manufacture credits are the only differences.

Rarity: Moderately scarce that includes a super ‘Map of Wales’ cover. (see further down for details on this). This one also includes the elusive family tree inner.

Brief Info: Until the Manic Street Preachers, probably the most famous rock band to emerge from Wales. Many Man fans consider this set as their finest and most popular album, a record with just four tracks but all long of course. An accomplished and melodic set that is well produced and spectacularly packaged with its famous Man ‘Map of Wales’ inner foldout that measures two feet square (please see picture). The cover is a fantastic example, the map undamaged and barely aged at all, clearly fragile and a ‘working’ piece of art. I have shown how this complex folding map works with a semi-open picture as well. Nice to include the inner sleeve to in equally fine condition, this part so often missing and this set is never easily found complete.

Cover’s Potential for Wear and Damage: This somewhat intricate and clever fold-out map is highly delicate and many simply fall apart, tear and badly split. The intricate foldlines are semi-scored and will literally fall apart with over or careless use. Somewhat against the odds, this is fully intact and opens and closes perfectly and to date, probably the very best example I have ever seen.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably better still. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces that includes the multi-fold ‘Map of Wales’ in the centrefold. Patented and made in England by GL (Garrod & Lofthouse) and includes the quite rare Man Family Tree inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Both sides show little wear at all with barely any rubbing or creasing. A kcentral gripper mark is seen parallel on both sides, that a natural manufacture trait that all are likely to have. The lack of ringwear on the back is unusual but most welcome of course. The only reason I decided against a Mint(-) grading is for a few light press marks on the back, in the sort of areas and type made by the zip on The Rolling Stones ‘Sticky Fingers’ album. These only seen under angled light with no ink disturbance or scuffing. In fact, the back is exceptional apart from this minor blemish.

The Map Interior: One of rock’s most spectacular inside covers and this will be very difficult to find better. All the multifolds are neat and unsplit, this folds away beautifully, care needs to be taken when viewing this delicate inner. Perfectly folded in looking practically as made with nothing to fault.

Top Edges: Both little short of pristine, straight and unrubbed.

Bottom Edges: Both practically as made, and that is some achievement, just a tiny tip rub on the front right.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Very fine and light rubbing to the front. The back entrance is superb and barely worn at all and guaranteed untrimmed. Viewing this end-on, shows just how crisp and neat the map ends are, these are fully tucked inside the cover.

Spine and Text: A superb and impressive spine: solid, straight, uncompressed and folded very square. All text is perfect and the surface with no wear at all.

Corners: Any tip rubs are minuscule and all retain excellent to ver near mint shape.

Cover Summary: One of rock’s most spectacular covers (when opened anyway). This ultra-attractive item should please most-all collectors and will seldom be matched or bettered.

The ‘Family Tree’ Inner: EXCELLENT(++): an unlined inner with the Man family tree graphic. This has a wide recessed top opening with barely any traces of creasing and no edge splits (or repairs). Hardly aged with any grubbiness or darkening minuscule. Any record rim impression equally light and faint. This scarce inner will also prove incredibly difficult to find better. Both the main cover and this inner sleeve could indeed prove significant upgrades for those who need them.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very clean visual copy that retains a fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A fine and faint mark on side one omits a few very light ticks and any surface marks are tiny, few and faint and it will prove difficult to find much better.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This heavy pressed example plays with very fine sound with little else to fault bar a few light ticks on side one – these relatively brief and only very light overall. So not perfect enough for the highly discerning, but still an impressive record and these brief ticks do not spoil the effect too much if a little tolerance can be made. The sound is strong and distortion-free, all frequencies are sharp and clear with a fine production and sound. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this record and it is still one of the cleanest copies I have yet had, an album that often suffers crackle and sometimes pressing sounds, not this one. A very impressive guitar-driven album with a truly exceptional cover, which is a work-of-art in it’s own right and an undamaged inner sleeve – and a record a record without too many blemishes, this is a very fine all-round example that merits high recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
