Description

Mamie Smith & Her Jazz Hounds 78 on Okeh

Mamie Smith (née Robinson; May 26, 1891 – August or September 16, 1946) was an American singer. As a vaudeville singer, she performed in multiple styles, including jazz and blues. In 1920, she entered blues history as the first African-American artist to make vocal blues recordings.

Smith's biggest hit was recorded on August 10, 1920, when she recorded a set of songs written by Perry Bradford, including "Crazy Blues" and "It's Right Here for You (If You Don't Get It, 'Tain't No Fault of Mine)", again for Okeh Records, A million copies were sold in less than a year. Many were bought by African Americans, and there was a sharp rise in sales of "race records". Because of its historical significance, "Crazy Blues" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1994 and was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2005.

Although there were many recordings made of songs with blues in the title during the previous decade, this recording is considered a landmark as the first significant hit recording in the blues genre ever issued. Another claim is that it was the first recording with a blues title by a black artist. The record made Smith the first African American female popular singer to lead a commercial recording. The success of "Crazy Blues" opened up the race record market, for the first time major record companies started producing records with an African American buyer in mind. Courtesy: Wikipedia

Watch for Future Rare 78 Listings!

GRADING: primarily grade my records visually, based on the Goldsmith rating system of Mint, Near Mint, Very Good Plus, Very Good, Good, and Poor. Questionable marks and scratches are usually tested on a turntable and noted in the listing. I try to err on the conservative side in my grading; but since it is not an exact science, there are bound to be differing opinions as to what constitutes a certain grade. Suffice it to say that I strive to be as honest as possible in my listings, as I plan on selling records, etc. for the long haul and I am not interested in ripping anyone off. That being said, I would add that the time for questions is DURING the auction, not after. I will be happy to respond to any email as soon as possible.
SHIPPING: U.S. purchases will be shipped via Media Mail, unless another method is requested by the buyer. All International and Canadian purchases will ship via Ebay's Global Shipping Program. MULTIPLE PURCHASES WILL RECEIVE SHIPPING DISCOUNT! Please make note of normal shipping time frames for delivery, and refrain from contacting seller during this period. RECORDS WILL BE PACKED WITH THE UTMOST CARE, WITH THE FRAGILE NATURE OF THESE RECORDS IN MIND. MEDIA MAIL IS MY NORMAL METHOD OF SHIPMENT, BUT IF YOU PREFER A SAFER, ALBEIT MORE EXPENSIVE OPTION, I CAN ALSO SHIP PRIORITY MAIL. CONTACT ME BEFORE PAYMENT IF YOU WANT AN ALTERNATE METHOD.
