Question Mark and the Mysterians (or ? and the Mysterians) were from Flint, Michigan, and formed in 1962. The group is best known for its song "96 Tears," a garage rock classic recorded in 1966 that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and would go on to sell over one million copies and receive a BMI award for over three million airplays.
Question Mark and the Mysterians was perhaps the first band to be described as "garage punk rock" and also may be the first Latino rock group to have a general audience hit record. The group named itself after the 1957 Japanese science fiction film The Mysterians, in which aliens from the destroyed planet Mysteroid arrive to conquer Earth
Though the band couldn't be expected to record another song as fully realized and potent as "96 Tears," the rest of their first album is timeless and amazingly cool. Drenched in cool farfisa organ & fuzz guitar underpinning the band's raw garage rock rhythms, the tight self compositions move and groove in a danceable seductive manner, moreso than than their coastal contemporaries. The band wrote most of their own material, all the tracks are catchy, picking up a few purpose-built tunes -- like the super-fine "Don't Tease Me," the driving, infectious lead off "I Need Somebody," and equally potent "You're Telling Me Lies," "Why Me," etc. all sneering led vocals with attitude that made this band the definition of "garage-punk" -- even strong are the couple of covers they perform including a bluesy reading of "Stormy Monday" and the rave-up ripping "Shout."
