This is a personal message from Lou which he sent us just one day before the sleeve was printed: 
Hi, my name is Lou Reed they say, and I want you to listen to me. I know I didn't have too much to say recently but now I'm going to talk to you and that's just because "THE SHEPHERD OF BROOKLYN" is not one of the usual "limited editions" but in fact the last original Lou Reed-edition ever. You are one of the 300 lucky sheep in the world to have bought the LOU REED MEMORIAL ALBUM, bless you! Well, there has been some confusion about my name currently. Some dudes have recorded an LP called "LEGENDARY HEARTS" as an attempt to imitate my style which shouldn't be of any relevance had they not used MY name to sell this load of Rolling Stones' B-Sides. I don't wanna be involved in all that Sixties-Revival and Velvet Aeroplane stuff. I have completely retired from showbiz and I dedicate my time to writing, motorcycles and housewives. A lot of hours are also spent on positive drinking. Sometimes there are no royalty cheques for "While Side Shuffle" or other antique mazurkas, then I go to my local peep-show to work as a money-exchanger. Hope to see you there. Musically I guarantee I'm as dead as a doornail, there's only one Lou Reed and he's no longer churning out product. By the way - there will be a sophisticated musical about my life called "VELVET FLOYD - A LEGEND SUCKED DRY" in the near future, hope you'll like it but I only do a low-profile-job in it. So "THE SHEPHERD OF BROOKLYN" is a final tribute to all the people who made me able to buy 1 liter of Scotch and 2 gramms of cocaine every day. I think this is one of my least boring works besides "BERLIN" and "ROCK AND ROLL HEART". Side A must have been recorded during the period when I released "TAKE NO PILLS" though the box notes say it was recorded in '75. Who cares anyway, I think I just forgot to include these cuts on "TAKE NO PRESENTS". Side B is a beautiful gift to the many of you who love the silly guitar noises I often provided you with. It's classic axe boogie & a good slice of immortal swine solos played by the invaluable talents of Mr. Dick Wagner & Mr. Steve Hunter. Real good cockrock from a Scandinavian gig in 1974. 

Originally "THE SHEPHERD OF BROOKLYN" should have been released as a 12" E.P. containing only 1978 material. The E.P. was to be titled "THE IDIOT OF CONEY ISLAND". But then your old man Lou who is a wise man decided that every sheep should get what he or she deserves, so the whole rubbish came out as an LP featuring all your favourite tunes. Unfortunately, a 60 minute version of your obvious all time favourite tune, the legendary "WILD SIDE SHUFFLE" got lost in the toilet during the final mix. Cry & remember me this way.

The front picture was taken during a soccer game in 1972 and shows (from left to right) the following men of good fortune: David Jones, ex-rocker, before he finally decided to become an accountant; James Jewel Osterberg, Hobo of Detroit known for his ability to write very moving songs about flowers and harmony only surpassed by such greats as Joni Mitchell, Art Garfunkel and Bob Dylan; Marc Feld, popular as the King of Protect Singing before he died in his subversive bathtub in Paris; Tony De Fries, Dealer; Lou Reed, Italian hairdresser, now established as the Shepherd of Brooklyn whose current songs sound as simple as he looks.

VINYL GRADING POLICY & ABBREVIATIONS USED

NM

Near Mint - A near mint piece of vinyl, this would be our highest grading used for any open record, still has original luster with only the slightest of use (no noticeable scuffs or scratching and will play with no distractions).

Cover: Almost perfect without any flaws.

EX

Excellent - This record would fall between NM and VG++, it's not quite NM but is better than VG++.

Cover: Slight wear may be displayed .

VG ++

Very Good (plus, plus) - A very good record that has been played very little and handled very carefully. Vinyl may have slight surface scratches that do not effect the play and still has most of its original sheen.

Cover:  Will have minimal marks and wear.

VG +

Very Good (plus) - A nice record which has been played and handled, would have visible but light scratches and scuffs, however this should not hamper the listening enjoyment for many years to come in the hands of a collector.

Cover: Up to 3 areas of wear may be displayed. This may be slight seam wear, slight ring wear, or slight corner rounding.

VG

Very Good - Record show visible sign of play with a few scratches and scuffs, may have slight surface noise.

Cover: Normal used cover wear such as ring wear and split seams.

VG -

Very Good (minus) - Has more imperfections that the above grading and we would only sell this type of record if it was very rare or for the cover value only.

Cover: More than normal wear and tear.

G

Good - Record has been well played and shows it, record if played may skip and would probably have clicks and noise. Again, this record would only have value if it’s very rare or for the cover value only.
