Description
This is a sealed 2-LP set of historic recordings of Leopold Stokowski conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in live concerts of pieces by Bach, Handel, Falla, Thompson, Prokofiev, and Hupfeld. Featured artists include Wanda Landowska on harpsichord, William Kapell on piano, and William Bell on tuba. This set is Volume II of Historic Recordings in the NY Philharmonic WQXR 1982 Radiothon Special Edition available only from the New York Philharmonic and not for public sale. This set was issued in 1982 but the recordings were made by the Voice of America in 1949 and 1950. Transfers for these 33 rpm vinyl LPs were made from the original mono 16-inch acetate discs stored at the Library of Congress. According to the liner notes, the acetates deteriorated over their time in storage but much of the original sound was restored by Steven Smolian Studios. However, notes say some ticking and background noise is still evident that could not be removed without harming the music. Since the records are sealed I have not listened to them, but the historical value should be obvious.
