Description

Someone looking for a red & plum copy from October 1971 - might well baulk at the prices. But there is a way to get extremely close - without spending an absolute fortune. The final red & plum copies were pressed and sold Xmas 1971. But the very earliest Orange and Green copies [the new label design] - were available, initially, with exactly the same audio just a few weeks later. How do we spot these copies? Well, the first thing is to find labels without perimeter text in the top half - and no sign of the Warners logo either. These are the copies from 1972. But the very earliest copies in '72 - will carry dual matrix info and exhibit the same deadwax info as the red & plum copies. The one we have listed, here, is just such a copy. Both sides carry the original catalogue number 2401012 with matrix suffix A3/B4. What is also noticeable is that it's pressed on heavier stock than you would find later in '72 or 73. The vinyl comes housed in an original gatefold cover with the original lyric inner sleeve. So, we're 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex-/Vg+) In lovely condition and has only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection there are a couple of light marks per side - nothing heavy or troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly NEAR EXCELLENT level of playback with just slight deviation in a couple of spots. Intros and inbetweens are nice and quiet and the audio comes across with great clarity. By and large a nice clean player. Even into those fussy acoustic numbers it's playing pretty clean. Not quite clean enough to hit the top grades though. STAIRWAY plays with some light background in the midsection - but overall very impressive. Evermore, too, is really nice - just a smidgen cleaner....better than you typically find. California plays great with just a bit of light static here and there. For the fussiest track on the album - that's pretty good going. Overall very fine player with excellent provenance.
Cover (Vg) Not quite up to the standard of the vinyl - but acceptable. Relatively clean front and rear - just light handling in places. The interior looks very smart - no issues at all. There's a fair bit of edge wear and this is the main let down really. There's a three inch wear through at the bottom middle edge of the right hand panel. I have tape secured it internally so that it doesn't gape. Bit of wear on the spine too - not bad though.
Inner (Vg) Acceptable - no better. Sides are split and have been taped up.
