Description

This is a rare 1965 promotional pressing of ‘A Song Called Soul’ by the Laurie Jay Combo on Decca - a great example of the British mod sound.

Laurie Jay sadly died in 2017 and is an often overlooked musical influence, who initially drummed for countless groups including The Shadows, The Echoes, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis to name a few; and purportedly taught Dave Clark to drum.

He formed and fronted his own combo and released 5 sought after singles on Decca between ’62-’65, before later going on to book acts for London’s ‘The Scotch of St James’ club such as the Average White Band and Vinegar Joe (Robert Palmer, Elkie Brooks); eventually managing the most successful black UK artist of all time - Billy Ocean.

As a result of his combo’s singles being so sought after, a Decca test press such as this (of potentially their most popular single) is a decided rarity, and a great concept track to boot!

It’s part of a collection bought from a gentleman whom provided audio quality feedback on promo records, see our other listings currently.

The vinyl has been play graded EX, as side A is audibly flawless and B has some very very minor background noise (which given how good A is could purely be the recording). Some small marks here and there been a fantastic example.

With original Decca sleeve, slightly aged.

Due to the rarity and value of this item we will only be shipping outside of the UK with tracked postage due to the included insurance, sorry for any inconvenience.

Please bear in mind I take our pictures under very strong light to aid transparency, sleeves/labels are not discoloured unless stated and scratches/marks WILL appear worse than when handled.
