The Lovin' Spoonful is an American pop rock band of the 1960s, named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. When asked about his band, leader John Sebastian said it sounded like a combination of Mississippi John Hurt and Chuck Berry.
The band had its roots in the folk music scene based in the Greenwich Village section of lower Manhattan during the early 1960s. Sebastian, who grew up in contact with music and musicians, was the son of a much-recorded and highly technically accomplished classical harmonica player. He had reached maturity toward the end of the American folk music revival that spanned from the 1950s to the early '60s. Sebastian was joined in the Spoonful by guitarist Zal Yanovsky from a bohemian folk group called The Mugwumps, playing local coffee houses and small clubs (two other members, Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty, would later form half of the Mamas & the Papas). Drummer-vocalist Joe Butler and bassist Steve Boone rounded out the group.
The group first recorded four tracks for Elektra Records in early 1965, but elected to sign with Kama Sutra Records that same year. The Elektra tracks were released on the 1966 various artists compilation LP What's Shakin' after the band's success on Kama Sutra.
Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful is the third album (excluding one soundtrack album) by the folk/rock band The Lovin' Spoonful, released in 1966. It peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart.
Hums was a deliberate attempt by the band to record in a variety of styles. They composed and played in the pop, country, jug-band, blues and folk styles. It would ultimately end up to be the last full project by the original lineup. It was recorded in New York with the exception of " Lovin' You" which was recorded in Los Angeles. The album managed to spawn four charting singles for the band, including the No. 1 hit " Summer in the City". " Rain on the Roof ", " Nashville Cats", and " Full Measure" also appeared on the Pop charts, all but the last making it to the Top 10. Bobby Darin had a Top 40 hit with a cover version of " Lovin' You". Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash later covered " Darlin' Companion" in 1969 on Johnny Cash at San Quentin.

Original 1966 MONO pressing on Kama Sutra Records. Not a re-issue, No barcode. This LP is STILL SEALED in it's original shrinkwrap. There are no drill holes or cut-outs. The corners are sharp and the shrink is tight. There is a piece of the shrink missing in the upper right corner from a price sticker removal and also a small piece on the bottom of the back. There are 2 very small cuts/slits on the back cover, in the bottom right corner. The colors are vibrant and the "white" back cover has no yellowing. Very hard to find a STILL SEALED MONO copy of this collectible LP. Record is in nearly MINT condition.
